This the classic argument for a police state. Increased police powers, surveillance, suspicion, etc. are virtually guaranteed to reduce crime. Does that make them a good idea? How many false positives are you willing to endure to avoid a

That this is true is indisputable. But the implicit idea that it's okay (or at least inevitable) is really disturbing.

Interestingly, I've found an opposite effect -- people tend to oversell their favorite movies, restaurants, etc., so a person's strong recommendation will often lead to disappointment, not because the movie/food isn't good but because my ex

The "I and Titan have a 40-year history" sentence is pretty poorly written. I had to to stop, rewind, and reparse to understand it after hitting the comma after "companies".

Kayak does this too, and even Travelocity did it a while back (although their version may have been killed). There are other sites as well than use a similar (or identical) metric.

I'm not sure why this is news. (I'm not being sarcastic -- just curious if/how this is different from the million existing from-your-city flight deal notification sites.)

I don't really care; if we were writing the law we'd figure out a reasonable but inevitably imperfect policy for each question. The point isn't to get every possible situation right. It's to come up with the best-bang-for-your-social-buck
