I think the argument is about whether someone has the freedom not to have their info on the site. It’s well known that FB has shadow profiles with no active accounts. You’re on there whether you like it or not.

There are quite a few better options for trustworthy databases. One is my employer, MarkLogic, which is an ACID compliant NoSQL document db with a lot more indexing capabilities. Especially if you’re using the search tools to retrieve data,

Could you give an example? Not saying there isn't one, but I haven't noticed a major trend of increasing fuel efficiency for a given model over the past 10 years. It looks like the difference would have to offset 2000$/year (

I suppose DDOSing a law you disagree with is one approach. Seems pretty high-risk vs. the usual way of buying off the flyover congressmen for a couple grand a pop.

I'd take the word "can" out of your first sentence, but I do agree with you in general. Airbnb, however, is a huge corporation with lots and lots of money. It's not a myth for them.

Probably some selection bias in the stories. It's not as much fun to read about a pretty good place to work.

Airbnb is a profit-seeking corporation, not a public interest group. They're not out to fight the good fight against "arbitrary regulation" any more than hotels are being evil by supporting it. If you don't like the law,

I think it betrays a pretty limited understanding of design, to declare a design task impossible because color-coordination can't be scoped in. Prioritizing aesthetics over function usually defeats both.

"female independence through hyper sexual objectification" is meant as a single element in that list, at least that's how I read it.

Deutsche Telekom was doing this and advertising it in Germany a few years ago but they've since stopped[1]. Spotify data didn't count against your (usually very slim) mobile data limit. [1] http://www.golem.de/news

Even then, they still wrote the automation. It would be a prudent move to involve human review before emailing someone and accusing them of making a bigoted slur.

Exactly. The point of my comment was just that automation is no excuse for this kind of thing. For me it's still about the organization, and singling out individuals is about as productive as yelling at customer support on the phone.

Someone had to design that automation. And it sounds like the message was at least made to look like it came from a person.

That's oversimplification. Even if it is just her own personal incompetence, if GitHub just hired her and let her loose as some kind of independent repo ombudsman to scold users, then yeah, that's a terrible management decision

Maybe she actually could've read the text and figured it out herself before sending out the note? Just firing off a warning based on a simple text match seems high-handed and/or incompetent enough to consider leaving.

It doesn't matter how much of a hack any actor is, it's an order of magnitude more hacky when the soundtrack is dubbed into another language.
