Sometimes I wonder why every single release of ReactOS seems to make the front page of HN. Then I'm quickly reminded of how well-written, interesting and detailed the release notes are. It's like reading through an adventure story

I guess what you're saying is that machine code is an "intermediate product" in the sense that the final product must include the compiler, and the machine code produced by a JIT compiler is useless by itself. And I agree wit

I'm sure any programmer who's spent enough time watching spiders build their webs must have given some thought to the algorithmic simulation of spiderweb construction. Different species create different structures, and some of the

That's a very good question. A couple of wild ideas: - They state there is a "significant ammonium concentration" in hair ice. Ammonium is a frequent byproduct of metabolism, that becomes potentially harmful if concentrations

This took me down the rabbit-hole of the author's website, mindsports.nl, which has a number of interesting problems in puzzles and games. I was particularly piqued by the China Labyrinth and related family of puzzles: http:/

Thanks! That's interesting, I've been unsure about the importance of PolySporth. It seems important if you want to create generative compositions in the traditional sense, by which I mean focusing more on the sequence of notes rat

OK, an example is trying to use threshold~ to sculpt a wave. You can't, because threshold~ is supposed to be a "control" object and runs at control rate. https://forum.pdpatchrepo.info/topic/7906/con

These days I've been working on a side project based on Sporth. I found the stack-based system is a really efficient way of representing audio graphs, and if you know a bit of DSP you can get the sound you want pretty quickly. I haven&

I've never heard of this happening and I can't find a single occurrence of it. I mean, I agree with "don't blindly trust everything in the AUR", but this seems wrong.

That definitely sounds interesting, but I'm also a little blazé at this kind of announcement. I have vague recollection of seeing this kind of ambition multiple times, and zero recollection of seeing any of them concertize. I guess the

The two projects are in completely different playgrounds. The midimutant is device that controls synths via midi, while nsynth is a synth (surprise!). And yes, it would be fun to use them with each other, though it would certainly take a bi

It's explained on his website, though perhaps not super clearly. The composition is a fugue, so it has a subject (main recurring melody). Each occurrence of the subject is represented by a large box on the timeline, and when it plays,

Modern waveform monitors usually have a feature that does exactly this. They replaced the older analog waveform monitors, which achieved a visually similar result but through rather different means. Very useful for video QC and calibration
