As a Surface Pro user it tickles me that Microsoft people are using iPads for the stuff the Surface was designed to excel at (no pun intended).

I went wild and bought four of these, to have a high-quality multi-room audio setup on the cheap. The trouble is, it almost never worked - I'd have two rooms working, or it would fall over after one song, or after three songs, or not w

I like that Micro Snitch's ears light up when the mic's in use, or his eyes light up when the camera's on, without the notification. As someone who uses audio/video capture apps a lot, it's a useful way to know at a

By choosing to make art, you become an artist, so in that sense only artists _do_ make art. This isn't art, though. Art isn't functional, art creates thought and emotion. Art has thought and emotion behind it. Code can make art, b

Nope, try emigrating to any country and see how un-dickishly they behave. Switzerland, for example. Immigration is not easy anywhere, and I'm always surprised when people assume it will be - or spend decades not sorting out their statu

It's not open source or free, but check out Xojo - xojo.com - which is a kind of cross-platform spiritual successor to VB6. Of course, Visual Basic lives on (as part of the free-as-in-beer Visual Studio).

For anyone who remembers the magic of compiling QuickBASIC programs but never experienced Visual Basic for DOS at the time, I highly recommend tracking down a copy and having a play! It's really special - visually editing forms/co

There was a 'Compile' option in the File menu. You might be thinking of QBASIC (which came bundled with DOS), which wasn't the same as QuickBASIC (a commercial program). When a friend first gave me a floppy with QB45 on it an
