Cool stuff, most banks, brokers and hedge funds have no FOSS culture. That said, the major blockers for financial services, at least in my country, are sort of unrelated to open source software being available. Thinking about the most basic

Agreed. Managing a Nomad cluster alongside a Consul cluster does not require a PHD, but it's also not a walk in the park. Hopefully Hashicorp will have managed Nomad soon.

I've been using Nomad for about 3 years and now I've setup a K8s cluster as well. I love Nomad and so do our devs, but K8s has a much larger ecosystem and more tooling options. A few examples: - If you want to run some third party

I agree GitLab's CI has many edge cases. More importantly, it feels like they stopped making it better to focus on other stuff. That said, GH actions is really new and full of imitations / weird stuff as well. I still think GL off

GitHub has stronger 'social' features and it's better for people who want to connect to other devs or build portfolios. GitLab is years ahead of GitHub for certain stuff (e.g. CI/CD) and IMO it has a better commercial of

A common AWS pattern: 1 - Hey, $SERVICE looks exactly what I need. Neat! 2 - Wait, how do I do $THING with $SERVICE. No way $SERVICE can't do $THING. 3 - Realize $SERVICE is extremely limited and full of weird edge cases, get pissed. I

It didn't exist when we bootstrapped our department. Nowadays Airflow is a dev favorite and we have no good reason to seek alternatives.

1 - Hide your ETL logic in REST APIs and use common microservice patterns for monitoring, logging, etc... 2 - Use PythonOperator to call your APIs. It's working really well for us.

Amazon's Airflow offering sucks really hard. As in many services, they made an awful job at designing a good UX and hiding the product's complexity from their users. Astronomer is cool, but expensive and they won't accept mon

+1 In my org we never use Airflow to compute anything. We only use a single operator: PythonOperator. All business and data access logic is encapsuled in REST APIs. Our DAGs are responsible for calling those APIs in the correct order, in th

I really didn't understand the state thing nor how CDK and Terraform aren't declarative. That said, I like how K8s + YAML allows a more "self service" like approach to IaC. In my org the goal of our devops team is to spe

Same here. I used TF for about 2 years and switched to CDK early 2020. It used to have a lot of rough edges, but that's (mostly) not the case anymore.

Managed git services suck at providing security that scales beyond a few devs. Most orgs that use GitHub are exposed to the risk of having their source code leaked by current or past employees. I'm hoping this leak will have serious fi

If one only needs a database, it's probably not worth to go to AWS due the unnecessary complexity. Now if you're using other services, be aware of egress costs, which are not mentioned in the article.
