My own experience is that there's a world of difference between moving between cities every few months (with a home base), or actually living somewhere for a few years. The former is more expensive, but far less hassle and lighter on the s

Check out "The Art of Pizza Making: Trade Secrets and Recipes" by Dominick DeAngelis. He's holds a PhD in engineering, and has done a lot of research to compile a simple pizza book. His recipes are a bit sweet for my taste, but his book h

If you have other (better) people poking around your code and giving you a hard time, you'll probably keep improving your strategy. But if you're working alone like I am, it's very important to land on articles like this.

This is distasteful. Every tech geek on the planet is trying to sound authoritative; I get that. Everyone wants to present themselves as a master of some sort. But self-praise is no praise. The Hacker's Path? To write such an article, y

Assuming that you're just starting to code, this project sounds too ambitious. At least try breaking it into smaller chunks that you can work on independently. For example, moving data in and out of a database. Install MySQL, learn about

That's exactly what I was shooting at. I realize that my occasional apathy is a great luxury that my grandparents didn't have. I find inspiration in knowing that I am a stone's throw away from real hardship.

My grandfathers managed to get their work done, all of it, without chanting mantras on a schedule. One of them was a farmer and part-time blacksmith, the other a cod fisherman.

Why? For the same reason that people cut flowers and put them in a vase in the middle of the table. Or that people shine their shoes, wash their cars, cut the lawn, trim their hair. Hint: it's not because they have to. You don't have to r

Fine, but who are they designing for here? A sizable fraction of their visitors will be using IE, so it has to look great in IE. It's fine to be harsh if you're being logical.

I _love_ the design. I noticed that the font for "Just buy this one" inside the orange badge is aliasing, both on the main page and when it appears smaller on other pages. I find it detracts from the shear prettiness of the pages. Edit: I'

I don't know any of the people involved here, but I would rather see this handled by the law than by an Internet lynch mob. The law maybe impotent and incompetent at times, but it's the best we have for dealing with criminal behavior.

I was really opinionated ten years ago, before I had tried to build anything serious. These days, I think every choice is a trade-off. I wonder if I'll ever be opinionated again.

I think we all have it in ourselves to be petty dictators, even to the point of convincing ourselves it's for the greater good. When we have a teaspoon of power as parents, managers or customers, is it not tempting to hide the truth and imp

These days, I really enjoy removing the skins from chick peas. You soak them overnight, boil them for two hours, and then you can squeeze them out of their skins. It's very repetitive and boring, and lets my mind drift. Plus you get smoot

I'm very curious why this comment got down-voted. I would not have thought of doing what aberkowitz suggested, and it's doesn't sound stupid to me at all. Would anyone care to explain why they think it's a bad idea?

I quit my job because of a cartoon about having a LaTeX CV. I had no plans of making a move, when I saw this cartoon on reddit: http://stevehanov.ca/blog/index.php?id=56 So I redid my CV from scratch in LaTeX, and it looked pretty good (

A lot of the hype comes from uncertainty and lack of real confidence in the whole idea. If entrepreneurship had a predictable recipe to follow and we didn't have to give it a second thought, we wouldn't spend so much time on the matter.
