I have founded it important mostly as a confidence builder. To use and program a computer without having at least seen how it all works at a lower level felt wrong to me. I felt like I had no foundation to really understand what I was doin

At the risk of arguing with Robert Pirsig, I have a mechanical engineering degree, and I can assure you that no amount of curiosity could motivate someone to get through that curriculum. For instance, your curiosity about boundary value pro

Well, since this question dropped below the radar, let me answer it myself for completeness. I emailed ARINC through their contact form, and a gentleman replied within one day that ARINC didn't have a problem if I just state that my product

I had a _great_ experience with 99designs, though I won't say it came cheap. The most useful tip I was given about 99designs is to browse other contests and ask the authors of the best designs you see to join your contest. Give daily feedba

Yes, I mean manually create them. Again, the flowcharts themselves are completely useless when you're finished. It's the process of preparing them that forces you to start digging through that little mountain of code.

I like the execution of your idea, but I'm not so sure about the idea itself. It seems the source code for any tool is not shown. I can't check it to make sure it works correctly, and I can't modify it or extend it. What if there's a bug?

At the risk of sounding uncool, if I was stuck I would flow-chart the gosh-darned thing. I once did this for an engineering subsystem with more than 10,000 lines of FORTRAN. It took me more than a month. We were relocating a flight simula

The turtle wins the race. Startup blogs and gurus often give the sense of false urgency. But if you keep your burn rate low and stay on course, you'll probably get there just as well. Worrying about competitors beating you to market seems

I think there comes a time for any unix user when you reach a break-even point - the added productivity of shell commands is greater than the head-scratching, googling and man page searches. I remember finally 'getting it', and asking mysel

I'm looking forward to learning RoR, even more thanks to this article. But please don't get the impression that only Rails works well with jQuery and SASS. I've been using them with django as well. They're not baked into django, but noth

There's a class of situations where the more you want something, the less likely you are to get it. Desperation puts you at a disadvantage when you're looking for a mate or a job. People who can fake disinterest have the advantage over tho

I followed a very similar pattern. I got stuck at DOS 5 and BASIC. At the time, I had a C book but my 286 couldn't run the compiler. Also, I couldn't run Windows 3.1. So I stopped learning and picked up the electric guitar. Like you, I'
