I agree you shouldn't have been downvoted for that. In my opinion, there's far too much downvoting going on at the moment on HN. People should remember that it's only a way to express that you feel a post is inappropriate to the discussion,

Why wouldn't you dream up your own simple app and do that? Nothing makes a portfolio more than a published app. Or are you trying to avoid the actual publishing side and just want the experience of app creation? I would say that the act of

I wonder what kind of permissions they had to obtain in order to do that? Surely they'd need to worry about air traffic and the chance of it landing on someone or someone else's property (however unlikely). Or maybe they went to some privat

It seems to me that it would be good if 20 hours a week was already the norm, but for the reasons you highlight, I don't think it's something that's possible to transition to from 40 hours as we have now. As you say, you certainly can't jus

Is it really necessary to look at friends in terms of "ROI"? Should I calculate the ROI for each friend? And if a particular friend falls below his/her expected "return" (however that's calculated) then do I ditch them? > Your current f

I've seen this "change your friends" thing before, when it is perceived that they are holding you back. Is it me, or does this not seem a little callous? I've worked hard to get where I am now, and I've got a good s/w dev job, and am workin

Yes - hardly counts as "news". Why does this get posted so often, and how on earth does it get to the front page of Hacker News?

I think they need to spend more time getting voice recognition software, on all devices including iPhone and Android, to recognise speech across many more regional dialects. I'm from the north west of England and didn't think my "lancyshire

You're suggesting that Turing-completeness of compilers IS covered in most C++ programming courses? I doubt it.

What's this: "If there’s grass on the field, play ball" ?! I think you'll find the actual phrase is, "if there's grass on the wicket, let's play Cricket." The American-ized version doesn't even rhyme!

The Market Economics Fairy doesn't work here because there is such a large lead-in time to making money as a programmer. I have had 2 or 3 friends want to become programmers just because they want to make more money, and also because they s

If they knew the benefits of doing that, they'd learn. My wife did when I showed her. Now she knows what to do when she sees a website and thinks, "that's not what it looks like on my laptop".

What I still don't understand is, what would I put in place of the Controller? Events are raised by the user, these are all fired off and I want to handle them in the same place in the same way. I certainly don't want event handling code al
