So with all the how to hire threads lately, may I make a suggestion: Focus on how good your company is on running an engineering department. Especially if you're a startup. Do you have a VP of engineering who knows what the hell they're doi

The goal of Java was always to be able to "write large programs quickly." In some ways that sounds terrible by itself, but I think it turns out to be legitimate. I've been on python projects that need to grow but struggle b/c all the things

I wish there was some way to vote for that abomination in the poll. Personally, writing Java/Html hybrid templates that are served as html documents and then further manipulated by dynamically altering the DOM in javascript on the client i

If this will be one of the most powerful encryption-cracking facility in the world, can we just set our key strength based on it's computing power? So if they end up being able to crack 1024 bit keys, can we just set our keys to 2048 and be

I spend more than $7/month on Highrise (from 37signals) to pretty much do what this does. Highrise doesn't directly support a sales 'pipeline' metaphor so I use tags on customers for each stage ("WarmLead", "ColdLead", "FirstContact"...etc)

I'd actually be more concerned about trying to define "junk science" than having a bunch of psychics running experiments. What is the harm in someone putting their own money into a pseudo-science experiment? It will fail if it's an incorrec

I suppose this (and the other responses) is about what I would expect: it's possible in Git if you know what you're doing. Based on my very limited Git experience, I would have expected it to take more flags to accomplish :) (It probably is

I'm doing a project using Python on AppEngine. AppEngine forces you to use a bunch of single threads doing what is really message passing, but implemented in Python so it's slower than Ocaml. I think this is going to turn out to be a killer

I agree this is the underlying issue but I disagree with your solution. One of the last big problems none of the popular SCM's has really fixed is separating commits that are "checkpoints" for the developer from those that should be used as

Kubuntu is not Ubuntu. It is a complete distro with KDE as the default desktop. In the future, KDE support will still be in Ubuntu, as much as it is in Opensuse. Opensuse allows you to pick which desktop to use [1]. OpenSuse is not a "KDE d
