One of my favorite songs. So many haunting lyrics. I've always been fascinated by "Superior, they said, never gives up her dead..." I've read it is in reference to the fact that because the lake is so cold, sunken bodies

I realize that much of this is all dummy data, but went through all the way to checkout and there are, in fact, fees.

I imagine this will be an unpopular opinion here due to the VPS provider, but if anyone is looking for a completely free way to spin up hobby apps, Dokku running on Oracle's very generous free tier is tough to beat. 24GB RAM and 4 VCP

6 hours of work is too much and ghosting is never acceptable, but I'd much rather do a take home assignment that takes a few hours than any sort of in person whiteboard or a screen share coding session. I struggle with where the line i

I agree. I have been using Oracle cloud for free for about a year now for a side project that is used in production with paying customers. I had my reservations at first, but figured it was worth a shot to save me the $15/month I was p

I've started a handful of side projects over the years, usually trying to fill a niche for small businesses, but none really took off because I grew uninterested. Once I started a project that was a) related to a hobby I already had an

I use Dokku for all my toy or side projects. Super easy to set up on a Digital Ocean droplet, and depending on the size of your droplet and the memory footprint of your app, you can deploy and run many apps on the same server.

Odd. We've been using DO App Platform with Web Sockets in production for over a year and haven't had any issues.

I feel bad sometimes about ignoring cold emails, but even taking the time to read all of them I get would require several hours a week. I am more inclined to reply if I can catch a hint of authenticity. It is usually pretty easy to tell whe

Similar thing with comments whenever a Slack related article ends up on HN. "I don't understand how a shitty IRC clone is worth billions of dollars!" or "Why would anyone use Slack when Matrix is free!" I often wond

I'm guessing (and hoping) this is a bug and not intentional, but this is pretty scary. My digital personal life is almost all within Apple's ecosystem, including most of the smart devices in my house. Getting locked out for any am

True, but neither are really optimal for serious production use. I've looked at them both extensively as I would love to move off Heroku due to pricing. DO App Platform is still really immature and lacking in a ton of areas. Render is

I believe Apple has made the APIs available for downloading and streaming from Watch apps. Pandora and other's use it. Spotify is the one refusing to bring this functionality to their app for whatever reason.

I am loving HEY so far, but this is one thing I hope they walk back. I get it, it's not the same as a traditional "inbox," but why does that matter? "Imbox" is annoying to look at.

I totally get the "their store, their rules" take, but it doesn't hold up in this case. Unlike most retail, there is no other store to go to. Sure, I could buy an Android phone, but the policy isn't much different there.

Having both is still an option with minimal effort. In Rails it can be as simple as adding .json to your request and you get the data, otherwise the HTML.

I'm glad this is the case. I've been a Rails developer for close to 10 years now, but 3 or 4 years back I got sucked into the React world. I bought right in and my company quickly adopted the "React on Rails" pattern. Lo
