6 hours of work is too much and ghosting is never acceptable, but I'd much rather do a take home assignment that takes a few hours than any sort of in person whiteboard or a screen share coding session. I struggle with where the line is drawn here. If throughout the interview process you spend over an hour talking to various individuals at the company should you also be compensated for that time? That being said, I've seen cases where the take home assignment is actual company work, in which case I 100% agree you should be paid.
