While the JOBS act made crowdfunding possible, it is still regulated by the SEC, and kickstarter is not a crowdfunding platform. Kickstarter cannot be a market for equity in companies.

Many of these comments treat "kickstarter" as a homogenous group of companies. Each project on Kickstarter is different, and the resulting liabilities would be different. In many of the most successful cases, the funding is tied to a pre-or

Just to use a widely known example - Pebble that raised millions of dollars on KS. In Pebble's case, each donation was tied to a pre-order. Since the watches have not been delivered, that money is not recognized as revenue on Pebble's incom

I think this article makes some good points but overlooks the crucial question - what inventions are patentable? Like a great chef that combines known ingredients, apple has made excellent products, but apple has not produced new innovation

It's my observation that blows to the head are more likely on a bike than in either of those situations for two reasons - the speed and the position. When you're biking, you're going much faster than you would walk (I commute every day and

I've always thought there was one critical flaw in the every man for himself retirement model (where each person is responsible for saving for their own retirement, as we have in the US) vs a pooled plan like social security or a pension. I

I think you are misunderstanding the article - All the songs were transposed to the key of C for the purpose of analyzing chords, so don't draw conclusions from the actual chord names presented as the most populat. Instead, what the article

I can't find links to the papers themselves, but the research was published by Lerner and Stahlman at HBS. They looked at firms that had top quartile venture funds and then looked to see what percentage of them remained in the top quartile

One of the challenges is that the buyer (LP) is usually managing billions of dollars (e.g. a pension fund or large endowment), and venture is only a tiny fraction (a couple of percent) of his total asset base. It's difficult for those LPs t

I think it's important to distinguish the "VC model" (meaning investing LP money in early stage companies) with the current compensation models that are prevalent in the industry. The first is alive and well. The latter is broken.

Many funds have provisions for recycling (ie calling a given dollar twice instead of just once) that address cases like this that are quick flips. One other note - for the first five years of a fund (typically), the 2 percent fee is calcula
