I was referring to the commenter’s second idea that perhaps the Mona Lisa on display today is a copy. Alas, the truth is less interesting.

Unfortunately (for a fun theory), carbon dating and x-rays of the Mona Lisa have disproved that.

Nowadays, and especially for those under about 30, phone calls come near-last on the list of things smartphones are used for. To change to the Librem 5, I would need to: - change the way I communicate with all of my friends and family by us

Interestingly, Google has recently started to shift their entire infrastructure for location tracking off their servers and onto users’ devices. Motivated in part by geofence warrants (and, in this commenter’s opinion, perhaps by anti-abort

Even if the system is safer than human drivers (I can’t speak to this), why would the lowest paid workers at the company voluntarily sign up for _any_ increased liability? If one of the programmers pushes out a bug that kills someone, why s

Apple has a lot of technical solutions that mean data is collected, but is never associated with a particular user. As an example, location data is shared with Apple, but it’s associated with a random unique identifier rather than your acco

It’s likely a mixture of genuine and ulterior motives, in this case. The amendment was proposed by a politician who seems to believe in it genuinely. Furthermore, there is a genuine gap in the law. There’s a case to be made that the law is

It’s clumsy wording. I took the intended meaning to be: “This data is from New Zealand, replacing gas turbines, but many countries will also be replacing fossil fuel generators and have similar numbers.”

Whilst the British Library is spending a lot more money rebuilding, and expected to take a year or more to be fully operational again, there are some upsides to this. Their IT infrastructure used outdated and insecure practices, which enabl

That is exactly what the lawsuit against the IA seeks to establish as illegal. Almost everybody this thread mistakenly believes that the lawsuit is strictly about the unlimited lending that has long since been suspended - it is not. The law

It’s actually about both. The unlimited lending provoked the lawsuit, but the lawsuit seeks to establish a precedent against 1-to-1 lending too.

That is quite literally what this lawsuit is trying to establish as illegal (it was a grey area before). Many people misunderstand and think it is just about the temporary unlimited lending. It was motivated by that, but went further.

The lawsuit is not limited to a ruling against the unlimited lending, but any lending whatsoever (even 1-to-1).

It was intended to send a message of “we support you”. However, most healthcare workers are paid incredibly poorly and the NHS is generally in an extremely poor state, in part due to mismanagement and underfunding by successive governments.

You’re right :) I misread your comment as saying there was no scenario where we should resort to it, and I meant to raise the question of if there could be one day.

You’re playing devil’s advocate so I won’t criticise :) But I’ll add - cloud seeding might prevent heating, but it can’t prevent ocean acidification. Secondly, if one country or organisation came to dominate it, and the world settled into a

I think the point being made is that mankind is not acting fast enough - we are currently on track for facing a real risk of an irreversible domino effect of heating that we can’t stop. The IPCC reports discuss a range of possibilities - th

In order to protect an area from capitalism (e.g. logging), you generally need to give the locals some financial incentive. Eco-tourism is widely credited with protecting mountain gorilla populations, for example, when perhaps in a perfect

There is no decentralised backup of the IA. They’re using 100-200 petabytes of storage. The wayback machine alone is still in the tens of petabytes.

If the messages are end-to-end encrypted, there is no way to do this. A backdoor or other mechanism means it is no longer end-to-end - some third party is involved. Furthermore, the UK has a long history of such “strict oversight and transp
