Data has always been encrypted by a key, which Apple held in a HSM (hardware security module, a special “black box” for encryption keys in this case). Previously Apple could take those keys, decrypt your data, and hand it to law enforcement

Are you sure this is correct? Apple One seems to suggest I’ll stay on the same 2TB plan I’m currently on.

Including fiction (but excluding the scihub mirror, and comics), Libgen is actually about ~60TB. Z-Library mirrors this, and adds about ~24TB exclusive to them.

Sony and Panasonic are making 500GB optical disks as an LTO tape alternative for businesses (See Sony’s “Optical Disc Archive” - Panasonic has a different name for the same standard). However, these don’t really have a use for consumers. CD

Only an undergraduate in Physics, but rest assured that there are many smart minds currently in search of this! Building bigger particle colliders is not the only solution, and there are a lot of interesting things being done with e.g. ne

Germany has a strong cultural and political opposition to nuclear power, particularly in their Green Party, for many different reasons that I’m not qualified to discuss. I suspect the initial cost is also a barrier to much of Europe, if onl

Apple Maps has this feature (adding a stop along a route). In iOS 14 it only lets you add one stop - they might have improved this for iOS 15.

Whilst you have a good point for the present, it is noteworthy that medical professionals working in covid wards (and so the ones with FFP2/equivalent or better) had, in the studies I have read, consistently lower rates of infection th

Yes, but HN isn’t made up of children. The vast majority of people here are adults, a population in which Covid-19 is a risk for a large proportion. People aren’t talking about children and saying “you’re afraid of the sniffles* (* is only

It is widely known and confirmed by Telegram themselves that your messages are encrypted at rest by keys they possess. This is a similar process to what Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, and Facebook Messenger do. Your files with cloud service

Fwiw, that “encryption” never used your own key or password. Facebook held the key, Google held the encrypted blob, and I doubt the extra warrant to get data from both companies was a huge hurdle. Definitely was not E2EE before.

They claim this is not possible under Swiss law, fwiw. We’ve recently seen that it is possible under German law, with a competitor (Tutanota) building a server-side backdoor for one user.
