I investigated and those comments were autokilled. There are handful of phrases that cause comments containing them to be autokilled, and one is "circlejerk." I doubt we have lost any insightful contributions to HN by it.

Is it the default now for individual entries on blogger.com blogs to be displayed as lightboxes, or is this just an unusual option this one user chose?

If it was also the feature users could use to change their displayed username, it would have to work that way.

Yeah, I'd be open to replacing the username. One of the biggest things I overlooked when I wrote HN is that I didn't make any provision to let people change their usernames. There are no internal ids underlying usernames; the ac

There's not just one sense of something being someone's data. The comments people make here are part of public conversations with other people, like in a newsgroup. There's a different sense of something being someone'

We don't let users abuse flagging. We have software that identifies users who flag excessive numbers of stories, and we take away their ability to flag.

That is an interesting question. I still can't think of one better than math and the hard sciences, which in my experience are roughly tied with SV. The to what end question is easy to answer though. It gets you a lot more attention

All successful startups are lucky, but they're never just lucky. If they were, we could save ourselves a lot of work reading applications and doing interviews. We could just pick randomly instead. If we did that for one batch, you&

The same arguments would prove that math isn't a meritocracy. Which it presumably isn't, entirely, but only because nothing is entirely. And if SV is only as much of a meritocracy as math, that's pretty good. Indeed, that&#

In every field there are dishonest people you want to avoid dealing with. So I'm sure every company more than about a year or two old has encountered reporters they'd never want to talk to again, beyond things like press releases

We essentially gave IK12 our source code. When Tim and Geoff were starting it, we told them everything about how YC works, and even brought them in to watch how we did things.

No, not it's not usually a problem if a company has merely raised some money, unless they've sold so much of the company that we know it will deter post Demo Day investors.

We have a much higher threshold for startups that have already been through an "accelerator" program. Mainly because we expect them to have thereby been accelerated; if they're not doing well, we worry they might be unacceler
