I'm on the team that implemented this, so I'm happy to answer questions. I'll give a brief technical overview. It's broadly a system for publishing metadata on posts called "Labels". Application clients specify

This is exactly the reason. In my SSB days, we had an extremely high character limit on posts. People became enormously long-winded; someone called it “full contact blog hockey” and that was about right The message chunking is a feature. It

That’s about right. It only gets really daunting if we decide to do e2ee, which we’d really like to do but have to decide if we can afford to spend that kind of time. Might be smarter to just make signal username sharing btwn users easier i

More of an accident. The hashtag emoji is a combination of code points and guess what the first code point is? ‘#’ The handling is a little wonky but if it doesn’t hurt anything we’ll clean it up and keep it

It's a fair point and we definitely debated it, but it was too important to us that we complete the mission.

PLC uses signed logs similar to certificate transparency. We have a lot of options for where to take it. There may be a distributed/decentralized hosting system if we can settle on a consensus model we're comfortable with. Otherwi

This analysis is incredibly incorrect. Relays are not fixed. There can be as many relays as anybody wants to run. There are backlinks. There are ways to dereference a PDS from a username.

At Martin Kleppman's recommendation, we adopted MSTs for AT Protocol's data repository structures. This isn't my specialty so I wasn't deeply involved in evaluating or implementing them, but my understanding is that the

Relays aren't hard-coded and PDSes are encouraged to connect to as many relays as they want. They are essentially network busses that help reduce the combinatorial explosion of connections between nodes. It is entirely possible for PDS

Harder to censor isn't exactly the goal. Harder to capture is. The point is to make social media providers replaceable so that users are able to express a choice. We do this already with the feed algorithms, which are predominantly thi
