Check your faulty logic there. The statement "if A, then B", does not imply "if not A, then not B". There's nothing wrong with accuracy of "If you aren't paying, you're the product".

That is why I still prefer old-style patch submissions via mailing lists - the bar is higher, so it usually weeds out exactly this kind of trash. Of course, if a company started offering free t-shirts for mailing list submissions and some f

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. You prefer narrower lines, I like my lines as wide as my browser window allows. For me, it's more comfortable reading text with long lines and having to scroll less, than having shorte

This is not at all about "dumbing down" or "information density", this is about choice and ability to consume content at one's own terms. If a website leaves the text width to the reader (or their user agent), every

This is what I don't get. Why not just make your browser window narrower? Wikipedia is one of increasingly smaller set of sites which have the decency of NOT WASTING MY FRIGGING SCREEN SPACE by putting text into a narrowest of columns

Doesn't keeping camera on increase battery drain, though? Also, with Facebook being evil and all, what's stopping them from hopping on "hey, the camera is already on, let's not waste that, and use the incoming visual dat

Step 5 is then that an open, federated and/or decentralized protocol gets developed, and it either gets traction or dies. Unfortunately, for many such communication channels, we are still only in the middle of this step 5, and we have

Fair enough, I did not read the article too carefully, and thought that the config checker was the part of sshd that validates the configuration when the daemon is starting.

It should, and it likely will be, since it is a popular piece of software. However, it is usually better to ask the maintainer to step down and continue his work without forking it. That saves everybody (distro packagers, users) a lot of ti

Isn't that exactly what these federated platforms (and the apps to access them) are doing?

You are simply not the target audience for enterprise Linux distros. But they have their uses, and I am glad that they exist.

Because making content exclusive to a single platform is not adding value - it is removing value from other platforms, and as such is a net negative move.

Sounds like you could get the same thing by writing a real software project to scratch some itch you have. Sure, other users might come eventually and, but you can just ignore those and keep building what you like.

I am sorry if my post came across as defending Apple, I certainly did not mean to do that. I was merely trying to point out that people tend to put too much emphasis in being safely vocal (online, where you're sitting safely in your ow

By all means, yes, mock away and raise awareness. That's good, it helps. But I know too many people who are very vocal about how Apple is bad and how they should be stopped, and yet these people keep buying a new iThing every year.

I can attest to that. I run a Matrix homeserver for a small community, and it's blazingly fast all the time. Everyone should migrate off matrix.org sooner rather than later. I fully expect seeing regional public Matrix homeservers popp

While it's an amazing progress, make sure not to overdo it. Muscles get used to increased stress quickly, but joints (especially knees) and tendons not so much - and those also heal much slower after a stress-induced injury.
