The description in the Baroque Cycle involved cooling the hot metal extremely slowly, from which I understand that Stephenson assumed the process was similar to what simulated annealing simulates (AFAIK the creation of diamonds is based on

If you believe you can time the market then you might as well go all the way there and start speculating in options. If you do not believe you can time the market though, then being 100% cash is as bad strategy now as at any other time.

OK I'll ask him when I talk to him, but I'm 90% sure that Chemical Reviews is one of the journals which pay. Not Science or Nature, to be sure, but not exactly bad impact factor either.

My dad is a chemistry professor and I've never heard about the journals charging the authors. To the contrary, good journals do pay some symbolic fees to the authors.

Let's keep things in perspective. I'll take ten memory leaks over one segmentation fault any day. Also, not every forgotten pointer constitutes a memory leak. To talk about a memory leak, your program has to eat up the amount of memory p

You don't need the notion of mass here, it's purely kinematics. From the Lorenz transformation you see that if something traveled from A to B faster than light, then there is a reference frame in which the arrival to B happened earlier than
