My formal education gave me the tools (or at least the knowledge of the tools) that I would need to make sense of things that interest me. Without it the bootstrapping would have been a great deal harder.

This sounds like plain old domain squatting. Think of it from the "customers" point of view. I think that prettypinksnowflake.com is just the domain that I could use for my project only to find you have already registered it with no intenti

Did you see that article on microcopy yesterday. It mentioned that adding that you didn't need to have a paypal account to pay by paypal improved the conversion rate. Maybe worth look => http://bokardo.com/archives/writing-microcopy/

Java is not going away anytime soon, knowledge of it would do no harm if you are looking to work as a programmer. I was trained in COBOL and FORTRAN. I used COBOL for all of six months (more than twenty years ago) and never used FORTRAN. Bu

So this is just a web bug? Whats the problem? I have worked at several companies that have inserted small images in web pages so that we can analyze the log files to provide usage statistics. To my knowledge there is no patent on this and I

I tend to delete my comments if I feel that they wont have any effect on the discussion or if I don't think that I will have the time to come back and follow up. Or if I'm angry, that's always a good reason not to post :)

All we should really be asking for is that the site that a link is to is clearly labelled. Most Coding Horror links are marked as such, as are TC links. Perhaps this could be built into HN so that when people forget to put it in it will sti

You might want to look at how your cache keys are created, if they are designed correctly memcached will expire them automatically removing the need for a cron. Of course how much of a saving this will be is another question.

It helps if you are going to deal with the harder stuff. Graph Theory tends to help no end, Complexity Theory (which you should get taught in a CS class anyway) is pretty essential, as is Logic and Sets. If games interest you then you will
