This is HN. Trash talking anything Java related is image-enhancing amongst code fashionistas.

I think that HN is hostile (and that this is PG's fault) but that doesn't make it useless.

Absolutely. There's a lot of "I don't like X, so X is bad" out there. It's quite disturbing the number of people who can't imagine that other developers might approach the world in a different way and with di

It seems to me that often HN is an echo chamber for people who want to feel superior about their tech choices - an attitude that's inherited from it's creator PG. I mean, "Blub programmers"? Can you get any more elitis

One thing that needs to be taken into account is that terrorism is responsible for very few deaths at all. Guns and cars both cause more deaths. I'd love the US to do something about guns, but are you guys having a crisis about cars?

Fair point. Macros in particular are frowned upon. Although.... they can be very handy when used sparingly.

...erm... more 'C for newbs'. Although, it does point out some interesting idioms of the language and I agree that scanf is bloody cool. IMO every language should have printf/scanf equivalents :o)

I program JS as my day job. It's a broken POS. You can do cool things with it but nothing can disguise the fact that it's only popular due to an accident of history, not because it's an appropriate language for the tasks it

While I agree that the US Patent System is broken for allowing this, Microsoft and Apple have to wear the moral blame for following this course of action.

So it's internally inconsistent and inconsistent with the mathematical notation. See, this is what I mean about Operator Overloading - I like the idea but it's actually really hard to see how you can actually do the job consisten

What operator do you use for vector dot product? What about cross product (as opposed to vector scaling)? What about the different precedence between primitive operators and overloaded operators ('+' and '*' have the s

Another "everything Java does is evil" rant. No wonder HN is all over it. This is tiresome. If you want 64 bit precision - use doubles. That's not hard, is it?

Claiming that Google is "controlling open source" by working in-house on it's own Android applications is just really bizarre.

That terrorist groups are most about providing a sense of belonging for it's members than achieving political aims as evidenced by the fact that they routine achieve the former and almost never the latter.

Likewise, Mozilla is in a unique position in that they prefer the status quo - having Brendan Eich on board with them - and they can easily maintain the status quo by refusing to support other party's efforts.

Yeah, us New Zealanders have kidnapped lots of US citizens and handed them over for torture in opposition of own laws. We've established an overseas prison explicitly to hold people who would have rights if we imprisoned them locally.

Coding JS is 95% of my day job and I'm 100% sure that it is the worst language I have ever used. All languages have flaws but JS's are serious, inexcusable and onerous.

Very much agreed. I don't go along with all of what Marx wrote but there are some insights in his work that are ignored by a lot of people because they have a knee-jerk reaction about anything or anyone related to "communism"
