I was at La Trobe 1992-6 and Manfred taught me in 95 or 96. I remember a mixture of VMS, Ultrix and I think SunOS. A monochrome screen with curses to do your email, browse gopher and text-only web, compile and run programs (in Manfred'

Every staff member had one of those. They opened new computer labs at La Trobe in about 1995 but before that it was VTxxx terminals accessing a mixture of VMS or *nix, I believe. I remember using vi in typesetting a paper with LaTeX before

He was a European gentleman in a remote land with a quirky sense of humour and generous spirit; not your typical stuffy academic in tweed. :) And he had an awesome beard, long before hipsters made them fashionable! The tribute pages below p

Manfred taught me mathematical logic back in the mid 90s. It was only much later browsing functional programming topics that I discovered his language and that he had passed away. RIP.

Bunnings (Wesfarmers) had a well-established lead. There was no compelling reason for Masters to enter the market except that Woolworths thought they needed a piece of the action. Such is our supermarket duopoly.

Bookshops that are still around have already survived Amazon. Remember Borders Australia? They died spectacularly and it was only the niche players that survived.

ebay from AUS sellers has served me well this year on their site-wide 10-15% off deals. e.g. Merrell, Colorado, Columbia and Timberland, $50 cheaper than at a physical shop. KEEN doesn't seem discounted much though.

"Four and twenty" is idiomatic English in that it survives in the children's nursery rhyme Sing a Song of Sixpence . It was composed around the same time that William of Orange reigned as king of the UK, so maybe that's

'Smart' displays? Where I worked they wall-mounted large screen TVs. Windows 10 casted to them over wifi just fine.

My windows laptop has only VGA out, so I hook up a second monitor via displaylink (usb -> DVI). I tried plugging the cable into my KVM switch and it worked okay on the Windows 10 side but there was some hot-plugging kernel panic when swi

Oh boy, the price! The article is lamenting the expense of 'modern' KVM switches. For reference, a switch with 'legacy' USB 2.0/VGA connectors that powers my ageing home PCs is this model: https://www.eba

I bought a USB2.0/VGA switch online for < $10. I had a number of vga and USB type B (aka printer) cables lying in boxes that are now put to good use! A windows laptop and a linux NUC, 5 USB peripherals shared. 4K and all digital HDM

The obvious use is laptop bans on flights and docking your phone to your hotel room's TV. Why so hung up about a keyboard and mouse? Even the local supermarkets here sell them dirt cheap these days.

Why would web browsing be any different to performance on a phone or iPad; it's just connecting an external display over USB-to-HDMI? As long as the phone's GPU supports that...

I already have dual monitors, keyboard, usb audio and mouse. Via a KVM switch, they drive a Windows 10 laptop and a Linux box. So I don't need additional computers in my life but if my phone had docking support I'd seamlessly just

Don't get hung up too much on the price. They charge that because they can. Expect Xiaomi to release a $25 knockoff for their phones if there's ever a demand for it. I suspect there's very little in the dock hardware itself o

The model I'm using, Nexus 4, was released 5 years ago to the day. Via a community ROM it still receives monthly AOSP security patches, albeit on a prehistoric 3.4 kernel and vendor abandoned binary blobs. If I had a spare $600 I might

The law is probably not much help if they're scammers calling from overseas. Criminals from India call us here in AUS pretending to be from some legitimate call centre, advising us of some non-existent government rebate.

There's a cathedral in Catalonia that began construction in 1882. Its practical purpose is to attract tourists to Barcelona; maybe some day it'll be fully completed as a place of worship.

Some people like to know there's 'twist' ending and the thrill is figuring out who did it. I avoided spoilers for Blade Runner 2049; Harrison Ford was in it and if you've seen the first movie that's all you need kno
