There's no better schooling than shipping working code.

Nice to have a full-blown client-side equivalent of schema definitions and validation rules, but for most of my forms, I just add it quickly and dirty. Sometimes it feels bad, but most web toolkits treat JavaScript as a second-class citizen

I personally know of a great out of the ordinary freelancing site that is in the works -- can't disclose any specifics though. But the thing is, it will have a niche audience. It is not where the big money is. On the other hand, I'd hire pr

Probably there are better ways to express a query in JSON compared to how MongoDB does it, but I'd take a step back and ask whether a nested map is the best approach to think about it.

TL;DR: JSON sucks for representing queries.

I love this comment for following its own advice. "Cut from the bottom," it is still very readable and gets the point across.

Wow, if online cheaters were not difficult enough to catch already! Without client-side verification (such as PunkBuster) it sounds "even more" impossible to distinguish between really good players and cheaters. I wonder if such libraries a

Threading is one way to parallelize software. Scalability requirements are finite, therefore required hardware is, too.

You seriously underestimate the infrastructure, availability and security implications of `counting money electronically'. Give me $1M and I wouldn't blink at $30K expense.

> PHP scales well. Any backend will scale if it runs in parallel and you throw enough hardware at it. Perhaps a more important question would be whether PHP scales codebase-wise in larger projects.

No need to apologize at all. Combined with your inner grumbling old man there are still not enough hackers bashing the stupid faulty practices PHP encourages. Edit: "encourage" as in (a) not discouraging and (b) making them easier to use fo

Not if additional examiners don't work in parallel, but sequentially, adding more layers to the process.

This drives me nuts. On the surface there is very little difference between `just functional' and `production ready'. And it's a hard sell if the client is not aware of the benefits.

I don't recall all the details, but it was Windows 95 times. This embedded system utility basically zipped the root directory and rendered the computer unable to boot. I could have saved my parents a headache if I had been aware of the cons

My point was that there are scenarios where data can be lost and a quick ok/cancel dialog with a short summary is not enough. Even when we know what we're doing a reminder of consequences is sometimes helpful to look at.

Exactly. This `netfuck' code is well documented, though. I'm not even sure which questions I'd want to ask first about the author's relationship with programming.

Apart from accessibility issues, I don't think emoticons work well in this context. At least they would make me stare more at the dialog and not less. Although verbs like Save along with icons like a floppy disk might increase familiarity,

Yes, it's a simple product and my review was probably too in-depth, although if there's any one place to submit it I thought HN would be it. Perhaps stating the obvious is not counter-productive if the product in question is not well though

In a way I too feel Firefox being slower compared to light Webkit browsers, but you must be writing a resource intensive animation if a modern laptop fails to render it fluently. Perhaps not only in terms of pixels and assets, but full page
