Because it's not 1k qualified people applying to the job. Also, retaining engineers for more than one or two years is a problem our industry has. Software Engineering jobs get applications from people all over the place. Our industry i

I close my work laptop at 5pm and put it away. I'm very glad I never had the workaholic-ism a lot of HN seems to suffer with. If the weather is nice I go for a walk after.

Snapchat is interesting - in my age group (mid to late 20s), it got obliterated by Instagram a few years ago, to the point where it feels "old" to use it. However it is very popular with younger people (college and early 20s).

USPS is understaffed from COVID and the new Postmaster (installed by Trump) tells people to not work overtime and just leave the route when their shift is over, which means more mail gets backed up.

HN may not have teams dedicated to getting you addicted like Twitter or IG does, but it's still addictive. Many people refresh HN multiple times per day and spend hours arguing about the same things over and over (seriously, I've

Greece's junta government lasted until '74. That's still ~50 years ago but it's not like this stuff goes away immediately. I'm from South America where the US experimented with setting up dictatorships after WWII as

My first job out of college in NYC paid $80k, and I am not a particularly good, money hungry, or hard working developer. I was able to get that to $100k within a year (age 23) via negotiation. You're getting taken advantage of. Even if

It's not that complex. Our personal privacies have deteriorated with either party in power for decades. Both Dems and GOP have voted to extend the Patriot Act and similar acts. Most of the NSA/PRISM drama happened under Obama (PRI

A lot of people make games or fun projects for #100DaysOfCode when their job might be updating a CRUD MVC app using Y framework. I think as long as it puts them in the "coding" mindset it's worthwhile.

Because maybe they support families with their job? Unless they had a ton of savings, parents aren't going to switch jobs with a chance of being unemployed again in 2.5 months. I wouldn't do it and I'm young and single.

I take breaks regularly. By this I mean breaks during the day and actual vacation. We have "unlimited" PTO and I usually take ~5 weeks off a year total, give or take.

Despite the intellectual aura HN puts off, most people come here to blow off steam or waste time. You're not going to get these people to read the article or formulate complex thoughts. At best they'll type a lot.

Aren't endowments for elite colleges mostly tied up in hedge funds or real estate to make them even bigger? Weird for me that they could have billions in the bank and still ask for tuition.

It's not as common as you might think nor is it always free or affordable. In NYC, the Sweetgreen/Dig Inn/etc. type places in areas with offices are packed from 12pm to 3pm every weekday. It's a huge market for them.
