I'm excited to see a high-profile project like this in Nim :) Any challenges with getting Nim on mobile? Do you compile to objective-C for iOS devices?

I've only used it a little in side projects (xgboost + mlr); I think it works better than caret, though (not as brittle). Most of my day-to-day is text data (which mlr isn't really well suited for). What originally drew me to it

MLR and caret do a lot in the 'unified API for models' approach, though (IMO) they're not as streamlined / mature as sklearn, especially if trying to do modeling using sparse matrices (they mostly expect dense matrices a

I am a data scientist (and use both R and Python regularly). I would take the plot in your link with a grain of salt - RapidMiner is not frequently used (at all) with any of my friends / coworkers, though maybe I'm just in a bubb

I overall agree that ML is needed over 'just SQL' in a lot of cases (though SQL + good visualizations / exploratory analysis can answer a lot of those questions qualitatively). I would also be careful with the linear model a

Speaking of optimization libraries, I've been checking out https://developers.google.com/optimization/ for scheduling and assignment problems. The documentation is not... wonderful, but it has a lot of examples a

What I mean by this is - I don't see how anyone could reasonably call a Random Forest "AI" with a straight face, whereas someone could (wrongly, but understandably) call a CNN / RNN / etc. AI if only because it has

I've been seeing nothing but negative, dismissive comments about data science on HN lately, which is really disappointing. There's definitely a lot of hype right now about DL, but almost all of my job does not deal with Big Data

You can be a little less brute force if you use something like hyperopt ( http://hyperopt.github.io/hyperopt/ ) or hyperband ( https://github.com/zygmuntz/hyperband ) for tuning hyperparameters (Bayes

I pre-ordered it a while back; I love the Parallelism chapter. Cleared up a lot of things for me as to the concurrency model of Nim.

Nim, using an LLVM library to emit IR. I want to use it to play around with writing a compiler (maybe an interpreter). It's just so much fun to use!

I mostly agree with you, but I there could be an argument being made for C++- the generics there are done through templating, and I've seen people froth at the mouth about the complexity of C++'s template metaprogramming. I agree

A bit OT, but is there a C API that Piston exports? I.e., could I use Piston from C/C++ (or another language that supports the C ABI)?

It would be possible in principle (especially if you can write a Python module bridge that can wrap your C++ / Rust / etc. code), or something that you can load in Java. But, all of the RDD and SparkContext APIs are going to be a

Could you expand on the lack of hygiene? I know Nim has hygienic templates by default, with an opt for 'injecting' variables into the enclosing scope (which comes in handy when (for example) you have a DSL for parsing command lin

Most of the complaints I've seen recently about using Docker are about the immaturity of Docker Swarm. Can this be mitigated by using Docker with Kubernetes / Mesos / Yarn? If it's truly a problem with the containerizat

I think that this example in particular is not the best for R^2. He's getting a really good fit for linear (especially when his first plot is centered in a narrow range), since log(x) has a nice Taylor expansions for log(x) ~ x - 1 in

Awesome - I've got to reread more thoroughly when I have more time at home. The cross-platform distribution and cross-compilation stuff at the end might be some of the most valuable.

I really have to take exception to this (characterizing MOOCs as some sort of useful-only-for-signalling high-tech "vocational training" for the privileged). I've been working through Andrew Ng's Machine learning class (

Hey - I just submitted a pull request for this, but thought I'd give a heads up here. The README.md has the import path wrong. It should be github.com instead of github.org.
