To actually understand what we as individuals can do, I recommend reading the Sustainable Energy book.[1] It's free online.[2] As a developer, you can educate and help people conserve energy. Heating and cooling are enormous culprits

Yes, I'm well aware. My point was that I and many others would happily pay extra to pad their margins if anybody would just make a laptop screen/chassis/motherboard barebones combo worth paying for. In my judgment, nobody has

Aye, I wouldn't be surprised if the authors of this stuff might feel similar listening to you talk to somebody in whatever your area of expertise is. Experts use acronyms amongst themselves because it's more efficient for communic

Well, if somebody legit wants to work for you, I suspect they'll be as curious about working with your team as you are curious about working with them. It's really a win-win situation for both sides.

If it's not too big, could you just use tmpfs for compilation, and copy the final results to persistent storage if needed? Just food for thought; your point remains valid.

To back up a step, why should there even be a "linux developer edition" model? Why can't they just make a solid laptop to begin with, that also just happens to support Linux? What's honestly different? The icon on the me

The semiconductor manufacturing processes might be flatlining a bit, but that's not entirely synonymous with "computer technology". One recent example we've already witnessed was in the GPU sector. They (nVidia and AMD)

Do you happen to know if they use Clevo, or somebody else? I'd be curious to know which China OEMs are at least marginally Linux friendly.

I think the line should be practical. Personally, I switched to running Linux full-time about 15 years ago. Never looked back. But I still used nVidia drivers even though open source would have been preferable. Using anything else was hell,

Meh. Personally, for desktops/workstations, the best part is spec'ing out the components and building it myself. I get it, it's not for everybody, but at least for performance-oriented software devs, in my opinion it's w

I don't know if this is a thing on OSX, but tmpfs can be pretty sweet for speeding up various storage-IO-heavy tasks. (In essence, it's a filesystem partition mounted in RAM)

What are you, personally, interested in? Where do your passions lie? What do you want to learn more about? Try to build something, anything, it doesn't need to be complicated or awesome or even original, that scratches a personal itch.

Well I imagine the needs of inner-city-poor and rural-poor are often different, to pick two extremes. But I myself have never lived either of those lives, and I've only interacted with the rural-poor (through volunteer organizations).
