Why not? Plenty of languages don't come with one built in at all, or not one widely used in production (e.g. Python's http.server, there are a heap of other Python web servers out there).

It is a straw man - you're justifying your suggested solution by comparing it to something that is already considered bad in the area. That's exactly what a straw man is.

That's a bit of a straw man though - Go is significantly faster to start than either. They also mention static binaries which Node does not solve.

To what degree are those being used though? Major projects (e.g. Linux, CPython) are still on ANSI C.

It's not just the config; Pylint assumes it's possible to statically parse code and make some simple assumptions about things like class / module members, which only works for the most straightforward Python code. It issues c

I'm disappointed - this isn't actually text-to-speech in Python, it's text-to-speech in C++ (or Objective-C in one case) with a Python wrapper over the top. An actual Python TTS engine would have been cool as an introduction

If you're relying on the previous behaviour of curl on your one-time URL, you're already in trouble, because it's been printed to a terminal and the real contents are probably irretrievable.

Yup, correct. It's not a high priority, just would be nice if it were reduced. Reducing their memory usage would be of a lot more benefit but it doesn't seem likely Jigsaw would be able to make a huge difference there.

I wouldn't worry, Maven Central is already that :) One of the most-touted goals is to break up the JRE libraries so you could, for example, deploy it to a headless server without any of the GUI libraries. That certainly seems like a go

Portability? With a little setup you can write your logic in one language with a reasonably low amount of extra work to handle different platforms. Staffing up two separate teams working in Objective-C and Java isn't ideal either.

Yup, I'm certain there would be a setting to change for the former and a solution for the latter. I was unlikely to sink time into customising it though given that I had nothing invested in learning it and the switch was easy.

Yes, but Scotland had a referendum on this relatively recently, and polls prior to that were generally similar to how they are now, so it seems pretty reasonable to see the most likely outcome as another No vote.
