Pixelmator ($30) is a cheaper alternative to photoshop and much more pleasant to use than gimp. It has tools for vector and rastor too.

Really interesting. I'm curious what their tools look like but the github repository the article links to is currently empty.

There might be a good explanation here for the emotional gains you get from hanging art and other decorations as well.

I don't know, I got it in the mail a week after checking out adwords but not spending anything. It said Google on it and the person I talked to was able to see and edit my account directly without me providing my password.

In my experience Google required me to speak to a representative to claim my $100 credit. I had already done research with the keyword tool and had a list of keywords I wanted to use and the prices I was going to initially bid for them. Th

For the Form Name section either darken the text or change the selection color. Add another Export button at the bottom and make it a bit brighter. Alternatively, fixed positioning would work. overall: Nice tool, nice UI, good idea, poor c

EC2 has a tier thats free for a year. So does Heroku if you're using a language/framework they support. I believe PHP fog does as well.

I loved the 3rd bullet point: "Software doesn't get bored and start wondering how to automate itself." I'm not sure if this will ever be applied to non-data driven fields but this is still extremely cool.

Good essay, still fun to read. I hid the bracketed comments and images. After looking through them they don't seem to add anything to the conversation. I don't want commentary on an article as I'm reading it.

I think this was posted in response to this article ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3179370 ) rather than because of some recent update.

Thanks for this. I appreciate both the warning and the tl;dr. It's interesting and well written but I don't have the time right now to make my way through it.

Link bait headline. Obviously the issue here is that Data Centers are not reliable enough. A good failover option is necessary but generators and UPSs don't represent the primary costs behind data centers, removing them won't come close t

I have windows xp running on a 7 year old PC that was low end at the time. Hulu and Youtube do pretty well on it but netflix chokes. If I were going to set it up again I'd probably go with Ubuntu.

Run through almost any programming book once and do enough examples that you have a handle on what you're reading. The point of this is to get familiar with basic programming (syntax, conditional logic, etc). Once you're through the book st

Re: the can't afford advertising problem, you should be able to find a $100 adwords coupon fairly easily. Hopefully you can make enough from that to cover further advertising.

I understand the argument for not having points but I think I get less out of HN without them. I'm not able to quickly find gems within subcomments without actually reading thoroughly and I don't always have time for that.

I agree with the other comments regarding $23 being too much for a t-shirt. That being said, even at $10/month I doubt I'd pay for schwag.
