This just sounds like nitpicking, its like saying that open source authors are not really giving anything away for free because the person downloading the code is getting charged by his ISP for the broadband access. Sure there is a business

I used to be an academic, with industrial research projects, for some time, so I'm relatively confident I understand how academia works. 1. I wasn't suggesting at all that academic research isn't paid for. Clearly the people doing the wor

Here's an example of an "industry" that gives away the product of their work for free: academic research. Now in this "industry" the free flow of this product has allowed people to build on the shoulders of giants and arguably made a big co

I was specifically referring to proprietary (closed) platforms and to SDKs with the relative level of scope/clarity/consistency we're seeing on iPhone. Note that people mention iPhone/iPod, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP in the same breath, and on t

Intriguing you would find it slower, I guess it is possible that the binaries are built to the baseline Mac architecture requiring some instructions to be emulated via invalid instruction exception on lower instr sets, which may also explai

$1100 is still a pittance for this type of SDK on a proprietary platform.

Afaik the iPhone is simulated not emulated, the binary is built for x86. So I doubt it would be too slow -- certainly not slower than the device itself.

I venture most of these are already present. Eg I've read elsewhere about "indicator strips" on the casing which divulge water exposure, the accelerometer ICs these days usually can be programmed to generate an interrupt on high-g, and the

In a general smart card system, neither the card nor the reader its inserted into, is supposed to trust the other, as either could be a fake. Further, the mechanism used to establish the trust (eg challenge-response) could be observed by a

I'm also skeptical. As I recall the GPL only requires source code to be made available to someone who has been provided the binary; ie in effect MS would only have to make source available to their customers if asked, there would be no req

I really fail to see how any of this "bites" him or makes him look like an "idiot." Specifically, I don't see how any of the broad sentiments he expressed (tech over politics etc) is at all impacted by the contention that MS's hand was forc

Three misc thoughts: 1) To me there seems to be a long distance between "no place for open source" vs "open source will shape but not win..." 2) While it may be so that "the vendors of today are the same vendors of 10 years ago"; that does

I'm not saying this isn't so -- but reading this kind of statement always reminds me of the many entrepreneurs that do end up being successful despite everyone saying it would never work.

I also wonder to what extent our general responses to possible diffuse future threats, are today watered down as a result of the media continually bombarding us with such, and thus de-sensitizing us?

Honestly the smc programmers manual http://smc.sourceforge.net/SmcManual.htm is probably good enough. Its quite light; even with a blog post one would still have to extrapolate from the author's application to how one would apply the too

What you refer to as a "big problem" and "holding back" of the evolution, I don't see at all in the same perspective. Its not imo an infrequent occurrence that software authors decide to do things so differently in a new version, that it fu
