To add to this, use shower board from a hardware store. The cost is usually <$20 for a 4'x8' sheet. The quality varies but the price is hard to beat.

Thanks! I don't currently have Newegg prices yet, but I hope to add those soon. Their prices are usually competitive and they're known to run some pretty good deals from time to time.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. It's still very much a work in progress - I was debating whether I should post the link or not given how much I left to do before it's really "ready". For CPUs, were you looking for a price/core ratio?

At $38.99 for a 160GB drive, they're paying $0.244/GB, which is pretty bad. Of course, at the low end of the price ranges, the price/capacity ratio goes up a lot. Their part selection still leaves another $7.05 available, which means you c

Definitely. I would classify myself as someone who desires the challenge, autonomy, and opportunity for growth of a startup, but I have a difficult time identifying viable ideas. I feel like I'm a creative problem solver , but not a crea

I'm building an immutable filesystem of sorts on top of a distributed key-value store, and am about to benchmark Riak to see how it might fare (as the underlying key-value store). I'm also looking to do some visualization for execution tra

(Disclaimer: I work on LabVIEW.) For refactoring and layout, there is a diagram cleanup tool that will automatically re-layout your diagram for you with just a button press. It does a pretty good job IMO, and really changes the way you co

I work on a graphical (dataflow) programming language called LabVIEW. It is primarily used by scientists and engineers for measurement and automation, but is also useful for general purpose problems. The code looks similar to a circuit di

MongoDB was ruled out because auto-sharding is still alpha (though it should be out of alpha soon, I'd prefer to wait and see what the community experience is with it first.) Between Cassandra and Riak, I chose Cassandra because it can run

The timing for me is interesting as I was just about to start up a cassandra setup here. This might be a better fit for my particular needs if I could get it running. Unfortunately, I'm having a difficult time figuring out where to start.

I've actually been working exactly that as a side project. Not only will it walk you through the component choices, it will also allow you to limit choices to components compatible with what you've already picked out. If anyone is interest

Just out of curiosity (as it is closely related to a side project I'm working on), would you find utility in a listing of laptops across a range of manufacturers arranged in a way that would make comparisons of CPU/LCD/hard drive(s)/memory/

It might help to be more specific - what kind of voltage are you looking to control? AC, DC, or both? High voltages or low voltages? High current or low current? Is the load reactive or resistive?

I've gone the Lord of the Rings route before using locations: shire, barrowdowns, moria, lothlorien, isengard, mordor, rivendell, etc. The only bad thing was that only about one in ten people knew how to spell isengard.

The iPad isn't going to destroy tinkering. The whole "oh no one will tinker and no one will want to be a software engineer" complaint is getting old. If closed platforms abound, tinkerers will create an open and adaptable one. There is a

If you want identical results regardless of optimization level or machine characteristics, you should really be using fixed-point instead.

It isn't snake oil - it works and works well in the right situations. Sequential code is very readable, but not efficient at scale. If you run a single thread (without the event based approach), each request must wait for preceding request
