"I'll have a hard time rooting for its success, though, when Jessica seems to routinely make mistakes like this" is both pompous and mean. She's 20, and seems to be doing a pretty good job all considered. If you really believe she's screwin

A = projected area, which is the same if our objects are the "same shape". As for the rocks, you're applying benefit of hindsight. Say I show you a balloon filled with air and a balloon filled with water falling at obviously different speed

This proposal is operationally stupid and morally dubious. From an operational/supply-chain standpoint: Manufacturing happens in the Pearl River Delta in China for two reasons: speed and cost. The cost is not so much a function of the cheap

Nitpick: the beautiful thing about Smalltalk's continuation support is that it's not provided by the compiler. (As far as I know, Squeak still doesn't ship with continuation support built-in.) Despite this, because stack frames are first

I'm 21. I wrote a bit about how I ended up getting into Lisp at http://lemonodor.com/archives/001038.html . (And I'm glad I did, because I can hardly remember now.)

Yishan Wong (early Facebook employee) gave an excellent answer to this question on Quora: http://www.quora.com/What-are-the-potential-obstacles-to-Dia... . (Quora is still in private beta, but I'd imagine many HNers have accounts.)

What makes you think they mean it pejoratively? There are sites describing strong AI skeptics, paranormal activity skeptics, quantum computing skeptics, extra-terrestrial life skeptics. It's the reasons for their skepticism that matters.

When you're paying $50+/hour[1], I find a sense of entitlement somewhat justified. [1] $40k/year / (5 hours/day * 5 days/week * 32 weeks/year)

He took bribes and he should be driven out of the industry like the parasite he is. He's a rat, through and through. It's actually a different kind of person that's an unfortunate presence in online tech debates.

It depends what you mean by "pattern", but it hasn't been shown that pi is a normal number. (I.e., that every sequence of digits is equally likely to occur.)

Right—it hasn't even been proved that the decimal expansion of pi doesn't eventually revert to a digit sequence containing only 1s and 0s. (Or any other two digits.)

It's common. GA aircraft have quite rigorous maintenance schedules, with inspection and overhaul every 50 or 100 hours, which (mostly) keeps even old planes airworthy. Almost all airfields will have plenty of 30 or 40 year old planes.

Though the overall point may be correct, it weakens philg's argument to claim that a non-US pilot may become "Captain at Major Airline" after just 20 hours of pilot-in-command time: that's just not true for any jurisdiction I'm aware of (th

This really drives home how bad the space-based ("Aurora"?) theme of 10.5 and 10.6 is: when we look at this in ten years, I think the screenshots of 10.5 and 10.6 will have aged the worst. There's something timeless about the earlier Mac OS
