Paying $10-20/mo for a fridge is not going to significantly impact retirement savings over the long term. The alternative is putting that little bit extra into savings every month to buy the next fridge when it breaks. It balances out.

Exactly! It's what I see of the spacex model - if you standardize one model and do it well, you find the weak points and either reinforce them or improve them.

That's the thing tho. Make it cheap enough to not be more expensive. Make it a quality product so there's little maintenance cost. Don't replace it every 10years and there's less overheard across the board.

I have a totally boring "financial engineering"-related dream every time I need to replace a major appliance: I would gladly pay $X/mo for one appliance in perpetuity that I never have to think about it again. Give it a repla

Couldn't you generate monthly/weekly salts to track longer-term metrics? Repeat visitors probably would not see this as that much more of an intrusion than daily stats.

Anyone have an idea of the remaining licenses or restrictions on these? I have a small pixel font package and it would be cool to bundle some if possible.

I know multiple engineering folks in the industry and they constantly tell me about how much the culture sucks. Very cool problems, but it's very cutthroat as you would expect. Source: live near many teams just outside of Charlotte

I've always wondered if I could take the Unix "everything is a file" approach way too far and hook it up to a web service. This looks like exactly the kind of glue to make that easy...

We had a similar setup at our University as well. Execs decided we needed to be a part of school-wide clusters though, and are now trying to retire even that computing hardware and push us to the cloud without covering any of the costs.

If these law firms really believe that they are acting like robin hood, taking from the greedy universities and giving back to the students who really need it, they'd be doing these suits pro bono so the students get every dollar they

Only two USB-C ports?!? That's really disappointing, I always have a yubikey in one so that only leaves one free. Seeing this, I'm actually more inclined to get the Air since it has faster ram, a newer processor, and no touch bar.

I've had multiple instances of scheduling Zoom meetings where GSuite automatically added a Meet link also. Had to send a fix to attendees the first time and caught it the next few times before I sent the invites. Very annoying practice

Hey all - I created this, after receiving a 3rd "cancelled conference" email in as many days, I realized while driving home that this is going to be (at least) a few really slow months for research dissemination. Happy to answer a

This is awesome. I have a version of an old 8x8 IBM font compiled into a pixel font renderer package I built for Go: https://github.com/pbnjay/pixfont This would be a fun addition, I had started a BDF parser I need to

I find go doc, go fmt, go vet, gopls, etc to be much more undervalued than the compiler itself. I use these supporting tools much more frequently than I invoke the compiler (yeah they're related...) but TBH the huge selling point when

These numbers are super misleading. 72% were continuously enrolled, but 16% switched to a different employer plan! We don't know how many of those were the same employer or if the spouse just had access a better deal that year or what.

I've been at 3 different universities now, and all of them have a 8-year cutoff for credits expiring even at the PhD level. So I've definitely seen folks push that number but in my experience no one has gone over that.

I work in bioinformatics in academia, and it's really hard to get good software engineers. Academia can never pay as well as industry, but we do get to do interesting work that leads to new scientific discoveries and medical knowledge.
