Or Catholic primary/secondary education. But still, both are highly variable in quality/coverage and likely much less consistent than you might assume if unfamiliar with the space.

I think the realistic possible end-states are either effectively Facebook controls the app store that matters or Apple/Google do.

And somehow despite that ecosystem existing before, new entrants Apple and Google emerged victorious. Maybe it had something to do with their different approach.

My takeaway from this is you do not know what ‘quantify’ means and are bundling a whole lot of connotation into it.

Further, all those choices are only available to you because others are ‘part of it’ and making services available to you.

Quantification is not an end in itself. I can think of many ways to measure civic participation and reasons I might want to, especially if I think it is healthy for society and wanted to encourage more of it.

Cool, that’s your choice. But it also exists within the economy. Nobody demands you to play a particular part in a democratic market-based economy, but you exercising your ability to buy cars, hiking gear, airfare, tents, and cheap street f

One is a trigger to an otherwise steady-state dynamic system. I don’t think unreasonable to ask what effect a policy change had, net all the choices each agent has and takes in response to the change.

Yes but also that some people would be getting a service that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford. But there’s little/no incentive for a pure seller to do that, although for a marketplace like Uber there is more possibility for t

If you are using significant amounts of data, Excel even on Mac is light years ahead of Numbers I’ve found. And probably still slower than Excel on Windows. My experience was using pivot tables with 80k-100k rows and maybe 20 columns. Excel

A really nice thing I noticed about Pages is that if you use the defaults, your document turns out very nicely typeset with zero extra effort, at least to my untrained eyes. Which you’d expect from Apple and maybe any word processor, but I

danluu.com mentioned this approach (or just, ‘big data’ systems) for traces and metrics iirc. Not sure if for logs too. Aren’t all of those relatively tabular? What would you be looking for from those tools to help with logs?

I think I’m probably not interested in this. PromQL is already relatively dense to learn, but reasonably well fit to the domain model and internally consistent, unlike most other metric querying tools I’ve tried over the years. Maybe that

This is absolutely a too-cynical position. Nadella would be asleep at the wheel if he weren’t actively mitigating OpenAI’s current and future leverage over Microsoft. This would be the case even if OpenAI weren’t a little weird and flaky (b

It can also break if the read implementation has mutable side effects, e.g. rebalancing. Java HashMap used to have this causing an infinite loop. I haven’t looked recently but my guess is it still does. https://mailinator.blogspo

A useful question is ‘how much better?’ For so many reasons, SVN to Git was a no-brainer but still constituted significant migration costs for existing teams and codebases: training, retooling, high-fidelity data transfer (you retained the

Even further than that, individual evaluations of ‘better’ can meaningfully vary. Not everyone has the same metric of success here and I think there are many reasonable yet distinct evaluation criteria.

Agree. Another item here that is contextual: what is the cost of a bug? Does it cost millions, do we find that out immediately, or does it take months? Or does it not really matter, and when we’ll find the big it will be cheap? The OP join
