> "I am personally surprised the Chinese state continues to allow the open sourcing of models this good, given potential risks" what risks? I assume they mean the risk of opening up "forbidden" knowledge to the masses

It's pretty common to have such laws. OpenAI can put whatever they want in their ToS, but they cannot go back and sue someone for violating those terms if the government has ruled that clause to be unenforceable.

What detector are you using? How can you be sure of its accuracy given that every commercial AI detector has been debunked?

The Chinese govt has a strong incentive to break dependence on the US for AI needs and build domestic models, but not to spend trillions to subsidize these models for the rest of the world.

This entire piece boils down to “I like open source therefore it is winning”. Everyone here has already raised good counterpoints, but one more is that all the companies publishing open weights models are heavily VC funded. What is their ex

"America's Homer" isn't someone you pick by committee. The fact that you have to debate means that this person does not exist. The American literary tradition is far too new for someone to have the kind of impact as othe

None of these are problems if you put data centers far away from population. No one does that right now because it's a lot more expensive to set up and maintain, because you have to set up all the infrastructure from scratch. You know

For something to be a viable product it has to solve a problem. What problems are data centers in space solving? I can't think of a single one.

I’m not ready to celebrate the victory of open models just yet considering all the good ones are built by private, VC funded companies. How long will they continue to be charitable? And what’s their actual business model once the money stop

We are talking about the top tier of open weights models - GLM-5.2, DeepSeek V4, Qwen3, Kimi K2. The ones ranking on leaderboards and giving frontier labs a run for their money. Gemma may have its uses but it is not in that conversation.
