Say Alice tests positive. Contact tracing: Alice is able to say, “I was in contact with Bill and Carol.” Then authorities can talk to Bill and Carol, and have them trigger their phones to see who they’ve been near. But because that’s slow,

This brought back memories of using my first computer, a Mac IIci my dad gave to me and my brother. We had the mouse set up in front of it in a way that it was way pretty easy to hit the reset and debugger buttons, which seemed to happen mo

Commenting from the perspective of iOS and its configuration profiles, you can configure them to match based on an HTTP connection (among other things). I haven't tested it (yet, I think I know what I'm playing with tomorrow), but

My understanding is that the chip is a proxy for when they started including it in the design. Similar to how some older macOS/OS X releases had requirements like, "faster than 867MHz", or "newer than 2012" instead

Apple includes a customized version of OpenSSH. From what I recall from the last time I looked at it, the changes were mostly integrating the key retrieval mechanisms with the rest of macOS. For example, Apple's ssh-add can store key p

Looks like that's for macOS 10.15.0 as version.h for that OpenSSH release is for 7.9p1 (macOS 10.15.4 has OpenSSH 8.1p1).

Even though the watches have the technical ability to measure spO2 right now, I’m not sure that’s even recorded anywhere. On the bright side there are references to it in iOS 14, so it might be coming soon.

I love using Sanoid+Syncoid for keeping my laptop (with Xubuntu on ZFS) backed up to my NAS (running FreeNAS). In addition to the periodic snapshots Sanoid manages, I also have a small script (shameless plug [0]) that hooks into APT to take

Just thinking of another way to do this with (hopefully) less human interaction. A local apt repository (Using debmirror with some scripts to generate a list of allowed packages), and set most machines to use that repository. Then set up un

I'm curious if Apple's work on hardening their secure boot process on x86 affects this at all? For this unaware, this [0] video covers it over about seven minutes. Basically they claim to be enabling the IOMMU with a basic deny ev

There was IrDA (infrared based communication) that could be used for serial connections to other Newtons, computers printers and cell phones. It was slow though, so the better step up was an actual serial connection to either a modem or a c

In the case of people using .test as a TLD we should be safe(r); .test is a reserved TLD along with .example, .invalid, .localhost and .local (the last being reserved in the long proposed mDNS RFC).

Because of how Obj-C works, it’s not really possible to have completely hidden classes or methods. You can instantiate classes by name at runtime, and can similarly create a message (aka call a method) at runtime. This is basically the “con

An IOMMU serves a slightly different purpose than a normal MMU. The graphic on Wikipedia [0] sums it up pretty well. The lack of an IOMMU would mean that if the firmware on the USB controller was malicious in some way, it could access memor

No, other browsers on iOS are basically wrapping Safari. If you want ad blocking on iOS, you have to use an app that uses the content blocker API. My favorite is 1Blocker X, which seems to be pretty well reviewed as well.
