It's sad that this troll gets more upvotes here than the original announcement did. Obviously every startup needs to be mindful of the potential for competition from larger, more established companies, but avoiding all the opportunities the

What does it mean for "Google itself" to have created Android? The product they acquired was fairly different from what's out there today. To me, this is a good example of a very successful talent acquisition.

At one time, Google itself was thought to be a Yahoo feature. It's sad that these "it's a feature" comments keep getting voted up.

It'd difficult for me to imagine anyone at Google (at least in that era) using the term "fuddy-duddy". None of the quotes sound like anything I ever heard or over-heard, which of course doesn't prove anything, but it's not the culture that

Google _was_ a web startup, and there's no reason that it couldn't have come out of yc. Also, a fair number of yc startups are not "web startups", whatever that means. (do you have to make hardware to not be a "web startup"?)

It's also full of inaccuracies. The "interesting details" are largely wrong. Unfortunately it's written in an authoratative style, so people assume it's true and upvote, demonstrating one of the major flaws in vote based systems.

Exactly. Async is very important when you're blocking on an external event (such as fetching a page doing doing hanging-GET), but local db or filesystem blocking can most easily be handled by just running more Tornado instances (because the

The important feature is that on the iPhone it will actually work. Also, there will be enough distribution to actually establish video calls on a regular basis (because both ends have an iPhone).

That's a pretty difficult topic of its own. Philanthropy is like investing, except much more difficult. The good news is, like investing, you have time to think and learn. Philip Greenspun has some interesting thoughts: http://philip.green

Not a lot of details. Is this a story about the HTTP referrer header? (aka "Referer") But don't let facts get in the way of a good story...

If you're addicted to crack, getting rid of your crack supply might be a good way to help break the addiction. You may think money and crack are completely different, but you would be wrong.

If the "cliché" is so outdated, why was I building apps from source just earlier this weak? Perhaps I'm just dumb, but I've never found myself doing that on the iPhone... It's amazing to me that people here would think that Linux has anywhe

Easy wins. As much as I love downloading and building everything from source... actually, no, I hate that. Apple built that first easy app install experience, and that's the reason people love it, not because of some ideological preference.

Not really -- we didn't know the Facebook team all that well. Your argument would make more sense if we had sold to Google, but even then it would be false. If your point is that people can build future success on top of past success, yes o

That problem exists regardless. Who can truly judge "merit"? However, investing has a built-in selective pressure. The people who are good at spotting things that will make money get more money -- the ones that aren't good at it lose money.
