It's ridiculous how many big corps can't accept someone working 4 days only. Happened to a friend, a big Java shop spent 1 year looking for the perfect candidate, courted him again after they failed, and even my friend said no to

Even programs with infinite descriptions are only countably infinite, but the reals are uncountable. This construction by Cauchy sequences looks innocent, but it's the diagonalization argument in disguise. (Start with all the rationals

Ah, okay, I think somehow you parsed my very terse comment to mean something about (top) management's request, but I wanted to illustrate that a (line = engineering) manager knows roughly how their team(s) would react to these requests

Sure, I also think game dev is more challenging than frontend webdev (and definitely more challenging than BUA MVC CRUD-fests on the backend), but IMHO any safety-critical[0] shit is simply where things start to get serious, though maybe it

looking at the linked launchpad bug it seems the issue is lock contention. simply pacing the reparenting would solve the problem, and reworking the locking (to allow the reparenting process to work in batch maybe?) would make sure it finish

Whose job is to pick a leadership that then values said rigor? Since this is a feedback loop it's everyone's duty to help so it works as a virtuous cycle and not the poo-poo loop it has become.

At that point you probably need a cluster of k8s clusters, no? For anyone unfamiliar with this the "official limits" are here, and as of 1.32 it's 5000 nodes, max 300k containers, etc. https://kubernetes.io/do

The problem is that the C guys don't want to define certain semantics. Currently "it works", but Rust wants invariants.

The kernel is full of (a-)holes (both the code and the project), because the a-holes drive away the people who would help fix the holes. Yes, it works, but there's a very real opportunity cost paid every day, month, release. It works u
