China will construct 150 fission reactors between now and 2035 to produce 200 gigawatts of power at a total cost of $440B. A similar buildout in the US would take 70 years and cost well over a trillion dollars. Do you think China is buildin

by parkingrift 5y ago
Fission costs would absolutely be on the way down if we continued to invest in it. Fission is a fundamental aspect of China’s energy strategy. They don’t spend 30 years building these reactors and they don’t consider it fully matured tech.

>An uninformed vote is a misinformed vote. Profoundly disagree. An uninformed voter may vote poorly. A misinformed voter will unequivocally vote poorly. I'll take my chances with the uninformed to not create a dystopian mess.

You're moving the goalposts. If we're going to enact policy for the betterment of society let us not stop at jabs. Let us enact anti-obesity mandates. We'll check your weight at the entrance to bars and restaurants.

It is true. The jab prevents collapse of the health system. But why stop at the jab? Fat people are also a burden on the health system. It is not too demanding that they lose weight.

I have a different question. What does it matter if I am uninformed on those two topics? What does it matter if I am uninformed on most topics? There are (almost) never any single issue items on the federal ballot. On local or state bal

Strong disagree with the idea that watching or reading mainstream news is informative. I don't think it's unfair at all to label mainstream news (US) as propaganda. Have you ever compared the home pages of major mainstream media

What metrics would you use to evaluate performance? I know what I would do, but I don’t use tenure to determine pay. If the company has some metrics they’re using to evaluate performance for the purposes of moving on from low performers… wh

I’m more referring to the culture this would create. If I’m at L3 the only thing I can do to get to L4 is… wait two years. Why would I do anything but the bare minimum to hit that tenure benchmark? More importantly, why would I stick around

Audible is abusing their dominant position to destroy competing audio book publishers. It’s not the agreement itself, but that it’s an agreement by the dominant player in the market.

Strong disagree with basing salary on years of experience. I see almost no correlation between output, skill, and years of experience. I actually consider this an anti-pattern that actively encourages coasting.

I’d rather solve for redundant power than worry about this. It’s really only critical if you’re running a database. Who runs a database on macOS?

The criticisms in this article are all valid. However, Russia is the one who has surrounded Ukraine with 100,000 troops, tanks, helicopters, and equipment. The worst we can say about the media in the US is that they seem perversely and di
