The problem is that there is no encryption equivalent to your theorized 'lesser backdoor,' it works as intended or doesn't. In the long run given how things are currently, I trust math to lie less than politicians, bad actors

If possible you should definitely get an SSD; mac or otherwise, the speed bump is more than worth the price. However, if developing for osx/ios is a priority, you don't (easily) have a whole lot of choice. I was in the same boat a

I have also heard/read about a few people doing this. If I remember correctly, you need a special tool to pick the platters up out of the drive without rotating them, but aside from that just a new controller/assy.
