That sounds exactly like a book[1] I've been reading to my toddler. It hadn't occurred to me while reading you could experience the titular "moon" so viscerally. 1: https://mindhealth.org/store/There

Google Maps is really expensive compared to the other GIS providers. Amazon's just reselling those same services. Google seems to coast somewhat on the strength of their map (including the unique and very hard to replicate StreetView).

Yes, and you only organisationally learn this distinction really once you've been say, bitten hard by a contract renewal that completely up-ends your architecture, requiring huge efforts to stay in compliance with the new terms because

That design raises the question as to what happens to passwords. Do they get replicated in the global table in plaintext? Or are you still forced to do a global user password reset if you want to failover to another user pool?

For posterity, the above is no longer correct. They updated their example to use 200 EC2 instances, which was most of the disparity, and it seems they do actually use 1024 KB/MB in a KB/MB, while I had in my head from elsewhere in

I saw the examples, but that was even more confusing because I think the maths is wrong on almost all the calcs: From the example: "Writes cost: $ 8.64 per month. This is computed as: ( 2 writes * 100 EC2 instances * 60 minutes * 24 ho

The pricing page seems off, $0.03 per GB-hour for the magnetic store, while the unreleased SSD store is $0.0004167 per GB-hour? Comparing with S3 prices surely the magnetic store is closer to $0.03 per GB-month?

One starting observation I'd venture is those countries (and Canada) base their policing on Peelian principles, which establish a basis of policing and the relationship with the public. The US police culture had different roots. Edit:

I agree, but think the virtue is as much as in the actual process of writing the summary forces the summoner to clearly work out ahead of time what the meeting is actually about and what it is aiming to achieve.

One aspect that bugs me about the situation that I've not seen mentioned is this disingenuous language Apple employs repeatedly in justifying its right to a percentage take on the basis of the services it's providing in distributi

I've thought about this for different reasons lately and concluded that companies that operate internally as a market would be vulnerable to second system syndrome, ie just becoming a poor imitation of the actual market. You could argu

Tangentially: I don't understand why they have storage costs so high for DDB still (hasn't changed since 2013) when Aurora's charging $0.10 GB-month (with 6 way redundancy at that, vs DDB's 3x)...

Water availability and weather events damaging crops I think are the big dangers. Greater variation in weather events isn't good for agriculture in either direction. Flooding at one end (like the midwest US got hit with badly this year
