There is absolutely no reason for requiring an internet connection for basic features such as setting an alarm or the 12/24h time format. I contacted Garmin customer support and they replied with corporate PR stuff, not answering my qu

Do they? Last Garmin product I had was a Vivosmart HR: an internet connection and a Garmin connect account was required to change basic settings such as the display orientation. And there was no way to disable syncing.

I remember setting up a Rails 2.x app on Dreamhost in 2009. At that time it was indeed more complicated than PHP (although mod_passenger made it manageable), but Rails was so productive and fun that it was well worth the extra setup effort.

Useful article. Getting started with CSS must be harder these days than it was 15-20 years ago. Not only for mobile-friendliness, but also because of the coexistence of flexbox/grid/traditional layouts. I'm wondering if the s

It's very difficult to tell which is the smartest animal - or whether an animal is intelligent or not - because intelligence is a broad concept and there are many kinds of intelligence. If you're interested in this topic a good bo

Ten years ago I developed a local rock climbing database called Climbook. Small website (~1000 users), no ads, no money involved. Facebook has spent the last 3 years suing the owner, saying it's a trademark violation. The first two rou

Most websites get little benefit from using a SPA architecture, and the negative aspects are significant: - deploy headaches - the infamous JS fatigue - debugging (minified code and nested anonymous functions make it painful) - troubles wit

I remember receiving an email I had written to myself a few years before via this website. It's a simple but nice idea; I hope it won't be discontinued or monetized.

I've read _The Black Swan_ and was disappointed. He repeats the same concept (that could have been easily expressed in a short article) again and again, while bragging about how clever, cool and refined he is. One of the most obnoxious

Definitely. I wonder if there will ever be an attempt to simplify (and make more consistent) the english orthography, similar to the 1996 german orthography reform.

I hate the new Apple keyboard, too. The full-height left and right arrow keys (they used to be half-height) have broken a 15-year old muscle memory. I'm tempted to carve them out.

True. I've been wondering why mainstream films are getting longer, too. 2-2.5 hours has become the norm.

The tree visualization is nice, but if you'd rather use a (Mac only) GPL tool then Gitx-dev, a fork of Gitx, is still pretty good ( http://rowanj.github.io/gitx/ ).

I would like the geospatial features to be immediately available, and not having to enable them in each individual database. PostGIS setup is well described but I've had a situation where it turned out to be painful. Anyway now I see t
