For your use case the best option is to run video off the intel integrated graphics and leave the DGPU entirely for compute. That's how I have this very laptop configured, and also how I configured the workstations for the people here

EFI really was a step in completely the wrong direction. Massive complexity & feature set for no good reason. Legacy BIOS had to go, it was designed at the time of 8086 and DOS and was really out of step with modern HW and OS needs. The

Yes, that change in the right bar recommendations was very noticeable (though it happened quite some time ago). Like you I find the new system much less useful. This has all the hallmarks of one of those changes driven by single-minded metr

The reduction from 16x to 8x PCIe lanes is usually not a bottleneck for ML. Still, it's always a good idea to benchmark and validate the configuration, especially if you're planning to spend a lot of money on a bunch of identical

True, but Threadrippers start at 24 cores and go up from there. That's got to be some intense pre-processing. Not impossible I'm sure, but it would be unusual.

It's worth noting that if your ML work is entirely CUDA based (as often happens), you likely won't benefit from a Threadripper CPU. Downgrading to a Ryzen 9 or even 7 will reduce costs by a good bit. The savings can be pocketed or

I've advocated for this for years to anyone who will listen, but it's like preaching in the desert. It doesn't help that many people are on laptops, and the war on ports (in general, and ethernet ports in particular) has made

AviDemux [0] works reasonably well for this. As usual it fails to calculate exact frame timings, which means the cuts may not end up exactly where the GUI is telling you (even if you take care to define the cut start at a keyframe). [0] ht

I get your desire to be conservative here, but this is not good practice with modern CPUs. For example AMD desktop CPUs are designed with DDR4 speeds well north of 3000MHz in mind[1]. Problem is that JDEC profiles simply don't go that

If you just want the result of the scan (not clear if the hobby project is the scanning itself or something else) you should be able to contract it as a service, or just rent the scanner. This is common for architectural scan work.

First, the OS can't hide that because it's not a middleman in the execution of program code. When a program is running on a CPU it has access to the instructions that tell it what CPU it is. Second, there are already many ways for
