Starlink is only a monopoly in locations without traditional broadband. It's not even a very good alternative in dense locations, where you compete with neighbors for bandwidth. Though perhaps they can serve enough users to influence

I wonder if they'd have the necessary data to report traffic in byte-meters instead of bytes? CDNs push a lot of traffic, but not very far.

This looks pretty, but it has the rather serious limitation that you can't search for a company, and then see what its neighbors are. Er, actually it is possible if you click one of the (unlabeled) neighbors, then zoom back in and hove

Decimal addresses are an artifact from the time before CIDR, when subnets were always /8, /16, or /24. IPv4 subnet math now requires obscure binary/decimal conversion. Hexadecimal fixes that problem.

Given all the recent chatter about Chrome turning evil, I spent a few days polishing my Chrome extension (IPvFoo, for observing the IPv6 transition) to run properly on Firefox. Technically it's been available since 2017, but there wer

Given that this extension is not very easy to install, I suggest adding a screenshot showing some actual captured network events. The current screenshot hides the most interesting feature.

The biggest problem with 6to4 is that the anycast gateways (192.88.99.0/24 and 2002::/16) often go to a different network than the one you're paying for transit, so you can't just turn it on for production traffic and ex

Assume that total propellant mass is a constant (limited by the launch vehicle) and temperature is a constant (because melting the rocket would be bad.) With constant mass, you increase the total momentum by increasing the exhaust velocity.

The temperature of a gas is proportional to the average kinetic energy of its particles. So if you compare (e.g.) water vapor to hydrogen at the same temperature, the hydrogen molecules are moving faster. A hydrogen+oxygen chemical rocket

The main thing I want from a watch is accurate time. This doesn't appear to have any sort of synchronization feature. Casio does make a variety of watches that receive WWVB and similar time broadcasts.
