It would cost an arm and a leg... it would be interesting to run the calculation though. There are a lot of bottlenecks in running a render farm like that, but one of them is just moving the data around. A typical scene uses upwards of 1TB

Yep. I think individuals can choose to work directly or indirectly on a problem and both are worthy. But Buffet didn't start his own foundation, he gave a bunch of money to Gates because duplicating all that infrastructure would be wastef

I asked this exact question once when bradfitz was giving a talk about Go at AirBnB. The answer was that the team is led by minimalists who are interested in keeping it lean and avoiding bloat and especially in avoiding it becoming C++. I

I ran into the same issue. I'm not sure why it's so slow but I contacted them directly and they bumped my import to the head of the queue. I would recommend doing that. The site may be slow but at least their support is responsive. They

Yes, that happened to the company I work for now... twice! In both cases we've maintained good relations with those developers and the tools they've built are still useful to us. I'm of the opinion that it's better to hire entrepreneurial t

I would rewrite mediawiki from scratch... It's an important piece of software and it should be easier to use, manage, hack on and extend. I'm sort of working on that now, but slowly from the inside out with a bunch of other responsibilitie

I don't think that's true, even if you look at most open source software. On one extreme, Mediawiki is a pretty complicated piece of software, approximately 900k lines of "core" PHP/JS code plus another 1.5 million lines worth of extension
