I have too! It's kind of the worst kept secret... Personally I'd be sort of annoyed at people wandering through my office all the time to show it off when I wasn't there, it's a great example of the creativity of the people who work there.

Great effect. Of course, it chugs my browser just as much as flash does... (hitting 100% of cpu usage on one core) An HTML5 canvas is not automagically awesomeness. :)

"Broken" here is from the perspective of the investors in VC funds, it refers to a report available here: http://www.kauffman.org/uploadedFiles/vc-enemy-is-us-report.... tldr; only 20% of the VC funds used by this one investor (the Kauffm

It's one of my big fears too. I've had friends who had to go through physical therapy due to RSI issues from programming. Some simple precautions can help. First, take breaks. :) Stand up, stretch, don't work "tense". When I get in the z

This is cool! But the command line is pretty inoperative in FF (11.0 mac). I tried to take a look at it but it's not throwing any useful errors. I did notice that you are using jquery-terminal version 0.4.7 and there is a more recent 0.4

The bit explaining velocity and sprints is really just a sentence... It may deserve a bit more emphasis. It makes sense to me, but to someone who isn't familiar with it, it is easy to gloss over that part. And you also don't mention that

phantom.js can do this, and the bonus is that it's already written in javascript. :) It depends on QT for it's webkit component but that's it... Doing a screenshot with it is pretty much a one liner: page.open(address, function() { page.

It's easy to spin a failure into a learning experience, that's a familiar story arc for everyone in the hiring process. My second job was a massive failure (with a public IPO and everything), doesn't seem to have hurt. I even got a job be

Hmm. It's not clear from your post, but if you are in the midwest, that could be part of the problem. Every company in the SF/bay area seems to in a hiring frenzy right now. You're the same age as me... and being without a job is a scary

Heh. Link bait title from Forbes, who would have thunk it. This is all just paper wealth. They are just comparing a hypothetical valuation from a few months ago to the pricing of the real IPO. I'm willing to bet that the original valuatio

Good point, I have no first hand knowledge of working at Apple. I have worked at some smaller companies (and that's where I am now) that do have a good work/life balance but nobody would recognize those names so I just picked one. Definit

I don't think you can run a 3000 person ~1B/y company like a startup. It's one thing if there are make or break projects at a bigger company that people sign up for explicitly, but it's not scalable. Not everybody can work at that pace an

That's probably partly because they haven't updated the specs since mid-2010... but I also bought my mac pro with the minimum RAM because I could get it a lot cheaper from a third party. I'd rather have a minimal minimum config to save s

This idea will never work, but on top of that his "rules for entry" are totally silly. Just take a glancing look at this data and you can see that his criteria should be inverted http://www.census.gov/econ/smallbus.html There are ~6M fi

It's a one liner. Once a page is loaded into the browser: page.render(path_to_output); I think it can save in PDF, GIF and PNG formats (it checks the extension on the filename to determine format)

PhantomJS is great, although there are some bugs in the WebKit embedded inside QT because it's a bit old, it has the advantage of supporting flash plugins and it can do screen caps. I'm using it for a project now.

Possibly early optimization syndrome? Redis is awesome, but the main problem here seems to be the amount of data (in the hundreds of gigs) and not scaling writes... The stated requirements are 7500 notifications per second but a single inst

Here is one of my PHP standards... I prefer this to more complex template systems, although the idea is borrowed from Symfony I think. The style I try to adhere to is to only use simple variables and loops in html templates. This is the ba

On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place. It's useful shorthand in a few specific cases, but I would argue that this sort of code is bad style and if I was in charge (which I am not) it would be in the "never do this

The lyrics on the Melvins album "Houdini" are almost entirely gibberish, it's mostly English but the words are half random and half nonsense. If you squint your ears a bit, you can imagine what it's like to have brain damage. Classic! Loo
