This isn't the actual story—the story is that Apple killed two machines today: - The non-touchbar MacBook Pro (RIP, function row) - The 12" "MacBook" (which I adored, largely because it was so tiny) What's strange i

Uh, Apple has less than 8% of the market[1]. Why do you think it has the "vast majority" of sales? I'm assuming there's confirmation bias here but the vast majority of laptop sales are definitely not Apple, and not even

This seems like an incredibly good place for a data center, particularly given it already even comes with multiple fibre uplinks...and incredibly low temperatures.

But "just plugging in one USB device" wasn't even what happened in this post. The amount of steps described inside literally were 10x what it takes to just build a PC, boot it, install games and play ️

I swore off Sony when my TV got an update to add advertising to the volume slider on the screen, which was the last straw. Weirdly enough, I replaced it with a Samsung, which appears to have ads if configured into any North American count

Huh, Paper was the first time I thought Dropbox might actually be able to go beyond files. It's one of their best products since their original, simple tooling was released.

I don't think that really means what you think it means. It's very similar to the way "Apple Pay has a Web API"—websites may implement it for authentication BUT it won't allow users on a Linux/Windows machine t

Docker is nowhere near as close to the metal as what Microsoft has done with WSL2—it's got better performance and runs as near-native as you could possibly get.

Even in the last year it’s actually a dramatic shift in the landscape. I use WSL as my full-time development environment with Docker/PHP/Node.JS, and have few problems getting anything working–no more than any other platform.

It’s fascinating, really, that Microsoft has narrowed the gap so rapidly with WSL. I read these steps–which I performed for years over the space of a few machines–and am amazed at how janky the tooling is. WSL/WSL2 are clearly pushing

It’d be WSL, and about as few steps as the article describes–I’ve documented it here: https://char.gd/blog/2017/how-to-set-up-the-perfect-modern-d... . You’ll just be using Aptitude to install packages instead–or y

Early WSL was a pain, but they’ve come a long way. My entire web dev stack works natively on WSL these days–and WSL2 is due any day now, which should make it entirely on-par going forward.

The modern X1 carbon does not have this problem. I’m using the 8th generation and the trackpad is very good, along with a screen that accomplishes full-on HDR, and much better color depth.

I don’t really understand why the author is being annoyed about a model that takes time to figure things out based on what it learns from the user. I use these buttons all the time, and they’ve grown to be more useful/accurate as thing

Yeah, I enjoyed the story telling but the sarcasm watered it down as a ragey customer who was being unreasonable—and it made it really hard to read. If you want to get a company to ignore you, all you have to do is get pissy, and it's

`Based on a modern stack` is a huge implied bias that something like PHP is old or bad. Who says that this is required for a modern CMS? If you ask me, PHP is a better bet for stability, predictability and well-known problem domain. Betting
