I can understand your point, but isn't the answer just "more science"? We want to have a theory based on early data (since there will be a policy, whether explicit or not, so better to base it on our best ideas to date), b

Is there some reason this is better than being built on an existing protocol, http!? "It is quite technical to set up, but in the future if the technology becomes more popular we could imagine webmails making it easier to set up."

I've also been thinking lately that having 2 levels of "police" would actually be a good idea: normal (aka non-violent/immediately dangerous) incidents could be handled by mediators who could try to resolve the situatio

I almost don't want to weigh in here since LA is kind of this hidden secret gem, but the answer is to just live on the Westside (Venice/Santa Monica). You can almost never have to drive if you work it out this way - I bike to work

Anyone interested in this kind of emergent behavior should check out a great project I worked on years back called Starlogo at the MIT Media Lab. It was designed to help anyone understand decentralized systems and emergent behavior. Here&#

If they really wanted to solve the problem, they should create/fund a service to promote the "truth" like a Politifact (assuming they do a good job - I don't actually know). Then you can fund it with: - taxes on all pol

I replied above ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7222232 ) but Facebook could basically sell Likes normalized against the users' total Likes. So a Like by someone with 10 Likes is worth 10x vs someone with 100 Lik

This is actually a great idea for Facebook - don't sell Likes in absolute numbers, sell them normalized to the fraction of total Likes for the users Liking you. So I could buy 10 "Fractional Likes" and get 20 users who each o
