When people talk about the death of corporate research labs, they're largely talking about the death of fundamental research -- places like PARC, Bell Labs, etc. Corporate research to take fundamental discoveries and find better ways o

Since you are ditching compatibility here, you can also ditch the browser engine.

Acid test is basically baby's first step. JavaScript api coverage, canvas, wasm, webgl, and all the other stuff is becoming table stakes, too. A 2005-level browser is probably tractable. It gets much harder from there.

Web standards are hideously complicated to implement, and browsers are hideously difficult to charge for. That doesn't make for a viable business. Unless they become a volunteer based effort -- which is unlikely, given the hideous comp

This is a big reason that I think wasm is a step in the wrong direction. It's basically nudging people into making things even more opaque. How, for example, would you go about blocking ads in this kind of app?

And when you run into a bug or design problem in a dependency of a dependency of a dependency? It often takes less time to write some code than to understand someone else's code. Most programmers I've worked with get lost easily w

Basically, it's the only browser out there even trying to handle modern sites that's not mostly funded by Google or Apple (Firefox revenue is mostly coming from Google, and there's Safari), and which runs on rarer platforms.

Maybe a shell is the wrong tool for that job, and hiding the modes that the language is operating in complicates things.

Consistent behavior when piping through all commands. A lack of modes of operation to consider. Simplicity.

Double map it, like a JIT does. Once writable, and once executable. Put the pointers into different shared objects so that ASLR puts a randomized offset between them and you can't discover the write pointers from the execute pointer, a

More isn't necessarily better. I'd rather have a simpler and more restrictive model with fewer performance, accessibility, maintainability, and security issues.
