Well said. Phones lose support long before their hardware is actually too weak. Also if we tried to optimize the software better, less of the hardware would feel weak.

There is Waydroid. Not sure if it would be a good idea to ship with it installed, though. It would probably set expectations too high.

I don't think vendors can stop themselves from putting garbage in their ROMs. The OnePlus One had CyanogenOS, based on CyanogenMod. That didn't last long. Now I've heard the default ROM on OnePlus stuff is particularly bloate

For me in the current day, perl is too much like "real programming", while I'm fairly comfortable with grep and sed, and to a lesser extent, awk. Piping a bunch of stuff together is just easier to understand and gradually exp

You can work around this somewhat by moving things to external storage and they symlinking it back to the original spot (or so I've heard, I have the top end model and haven't filled it up yet).

Check out some free software titles on F-Droid. Shattered Pixel Dungeon and Minetest are a couple examples. Anuto TD is also a decent low-budget-feeling tower defense game (don't set your expectations too high).

I believe there are some limiting laws/regulations around radios that make DIY, free, hackable ones usually not allowed. So, modems, WLAN cards, wireless routers... tend to be quite proprietary.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is 11 years old and had an AMOLED screen (does that still count as OLED?). People are still using them with custom ROMs somewhat, and I haven't heard of display issues. There's also the first revision Play

Will this really work well out of the box with distros using linux-libre, such as Guix System? I believe every Intel iGPU after Haswell depends on binary blobs. I also agree with several of the complaints others have made. Three mouse butto
