LOL. Google built a product so similar to an existing product that customers have trouble telling them apart. Why? So they could cancel it. And so somebody could get a promotion for launching a new product. Oh Google, never change.

Miners are turning back on shuttered fossil fuel burning power stations. Pumping carbon into the air for zero public benefit. of course they’d prefer cheaper power if they could get it - everybody does. But just because they prefer clean po

Amazon's pretty reasonable really most of the time. Certain teams work people like dogs, and junior engineers are too-often treated like shit. But if you're Sr. SDE or higher, it's usually quite reasonable.

Why do you? Just stop. Delete your account. Unless there's something genuinely work related, there are other (and better!) ways to talk to your friends and family.

The term "lab leak" is ambiguous (deliberately I guess) as to whether the virus was modified in the lab before it leaked, or if the lab leaked an unmodified virus. But the preponderance of evidence is that the leaked virus was mod

Often (in this case) burning trash in dumpsters is highly profitable, so they can pay people enough to plug their noses and look the other way.

The fact that this constitutes a serious attempt to block political ads is laughable.

Instead of doing it in your head, I bet you could write some code that could figure it out. In fact I bet somebody has already written that code. You could probably figure it out with 1 line of import and another line of function call. Nice

It's not entirely settled law, but it seems the US Supreme Court would probably disagree with you. These issues were near the center of the Authors Guild vs Google case that ran from 2005 to 2015. There's a good relevant summary

This is not the first time. But it’s the biggest net gain so far by a good wide margin. Still a very long way to go before becoming similar to a fossil burning power plant. They got equivalent of 1 megawatt for a single second. A typical co

Since biology operates on video streams much more than still frames, I think the natural interpretation of the statement is “how much power would a computer draw when doing the same kind of (continuous) facial recognition that a brain does?

Sorry to hear that. Food research is super hard. Lots of people definitely have sensitivities to foods (like gluten) that have real effects whose mechanisms are not well understood. e.g. epilepsy is often really well controlled by a keto di

Plenty wrong with this statement but the units are fine. If you ask somebody “how much energy does that lightbulb use?” the most normal and correct answer would be something like “40 watts”. An answer like “you mean ‘how much power’ not ene

Definitely a confused example. Unclear if it should be attributed to the article author or the quoted scientist. The fact that computers are still bad at something brains are good at has nothing to do with fatigue.

Anybody know if consuming MSG is related to glutamate levels in the brain? I know MSG is a subject of long and mostly pointless debate but curious what the actual science is here.

Talking about “the incentive problem” as if it’s some minor fixable issue ignores all of human psychology and economics. The climate crisis is a somewhat comparable example - it requires changing behavior on a massive scale for abstract ben

Exactly. A refinement on your second point is that the groups who would have benefited the most from semantic web were the googles of the world, but they were also the ones who needed it the least. Because they were well ahead of everybody

I think you’re on the right track that trees are good at feature engineering. But the key problem is that DL researchers are horrible at feature engineering, because they have never had to do it. These folks included. The feature engineerin

Wow the scale on the historic chart on that page is just nuts! Looking at Q2 & Q3 of 2020 - it just dwarfs everything and nearly makes the chart unreadable for the scale of numbers that we usually think of as important - where a full p
