ZFS certainly slows down as it fills up, but only enough to affect high-IO, write-intensive loads like databases. A light-weight application like a home or office file server can still saturate gigabit ethernet even while 99% full.

Prineville is a lovely place and as an Oregonian I'm thrilled that high tech jobs have come to a rural town that does not get many opportunities like this.

Why start with WW1? Wouldn't this effect work with earlier, smaller-scale wars as well? And since we've had wars for all of history, and have even observed wars in other primates, surely bravery has been selected against for milli

Here it is at 10pt and you know it actually looks decent. Maybe bad font hinting in PDF viewers has biased me against Computer Modern. https://frammish.org/cmu_serif-10pt.png

It's funny how the article praises large x-height and low-contrast strokes, yet it is written in Garamond, a font with small x-height and high-contrast strokes. Personally I like small x-height and high-contrast strokes, so I find the

The problem with fuel cells is power output. They are very efficient and reliable but they generate much less power than a mechanical engine of the same weight. Power/weight ratio is very important for aircraft engines.

Distributed filesystems are backed by local filesystems. The local filesystem can be ZFS with all of its benefits even if you also have a fancy facility-wide filesystem running on top of it.

You can grow it horizontally by adding a new vdev. ZFS doesn't allow you to do anything you may ever possibly want to do, but it does allow you to do more than any other RAID solution. It's not perfect but it's still pretty i

If you create a zpool with '-o autoexpand=on' you can replace disks with larger ones one at a time, waiting for each one to resilver. After replacing the last disk the pool will jump to the new size.

If SSH is on a non-standard port, it is still possible to brute-force access to the server. You will see fewer automated attempts but you are still vulnerable to a motivated attacker who port scans you and finds the SSH port. Such an attack

I think Go hoped GCC would be their high-performance compiler, but it never got the attention it needed. GCC has better micro-optimization in gccgo, but the compiler lacks important features like escape analysis and an up-to-date runtime so

They won't. The Go authors value simplicity. Many people dislike ternary syntax and find it hard to read. Go errs on the side of verbosity and readability. It is sort of the opposite of Perl in that respect.
